Heads up Gilmour/Floyd fans
Posted by: Kevin-W on 08 November 2015
Going through my BBC Press Office emails, I notice that BBC Two will be broadcasting next Saturday (9.45pm, 15th November) "Wider Horizons", a 70-minute documentary/interview with Dave Gilmour.
There's a short preview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_ueFxgO5sY
BBC microsite here but no real content as yet.
Thanks for the tip, Kevin. Will have to remember to programme the Sky box to record that.
Mike
Thanks for the links K looking forward to the full 70 minute broadcast next Saturday, Does your press release indicate if its all new unseen material.

It's a bit vague G - but I think it is more about DG than the Floyd. A pity really, because he has spent the last couple of decades buying up clips and the like from the band's career. He bought up a huge stash about 10 years ago from his old schoolfriend, the film-maker and early Floyd circle member Anthony Stern.
However it is a specially-commissioned film, so you never know what we'll see

Crumbs for Floydies......
Hi thanks for the heads up looking forward to tuning in on Saturday night.
Just one thing though it's Saturday 14th November 21:45 not the 15th
heres some blurb from my tv listing
'Floyd and Gilmour fan that I am, I feel that the BBC have gone OTT. "One of the greatest guitarist and singers of all time". Do you think so, really?!
No stretch whatsoever as a guitarist. DG's among the tops! To me, his signature artistry on guitar is being surgically precise and simultaneously smooth as velvet.
While DG's vocals served PF well, he has a pretty limited range or diversity so absolutely NO as a singer.
Just a reminder the programme is on tonight.
Sky box programmed and waiting
Thanks.

All set & ready to play & record
Via optical to NDX/SN & with one or two red grape juices to wash down the quality chess selection will do it nicely
Very enjoyable and an honest insight into his relationship, or lack if it, with his parents. As a result he seemed to have found it difficult to externally express his emotions except through his music which is what his wife also said.
With a nice insight into his studios, composing and recording techniques ascwell as having a mental block about the lyrics for WYWH.
An honest, interesting and warming insight into the man and his music.

Agree with @FfF. Good programme. He certainly has some kit...!!
Nice bit about Syd - but DG FastFwded the later Floyd mess... We dont want to talk about that...! Fairy Nuff. Its been done to death.
Also nice bit about Rick. DG couldn't find another keyboard player....
Well worth seeking out on Beeb IPlayer for Floydies...!

Watched it last night, and it was an interesting bio of the man and his musical career and personal life. Musically, it just contained lots of 'snippets,' and was somewhat less entertaining than Jools Holland Later, which followed it with a programme of vintage Duo performances.
+3 to the above .............
One thing that struck me as strange was the recording studio houseboat ...... coming from a marine background (many moons ago) a boat is the last place I would choose to store delicate electronics, damp even in summer, cold & 100% humidity in winter.
However it cannot be the case with the DG houseboat; It's been a feature of the lower Thames for many years, called Astoria it was built in 1911 for the theatre impresario Fred Karno. It must be a bit of a passion to him as these things drink cash faster than the hull leaks. The boat was extremely well kept with superb varnish, paint & fittings, to keep it like that especially during the winter DG must be heating & possibly a touch of AC dry air as well; plus an old wooden hull it must have an auto bilge pump on 24/7.
Nice life style, loved the wandering around the Sussex farm & the BBQ field, he seems to have the work/family/life balance well sorted.
I really enjoyed it overall. I thought it was really sad when he said he didn't miss his late Mum.
My only issue was the presence of Yentnob

I certainly do. My two favourite electric guitarists have an instantly recognisable style, and to my ears play some of the most haunting guitar music ever. David Gilmour is one, Peter Green the other.
That's not to say that I don't appreciate the technicians out there (eg Joe Bonammassa or Lee Ritenour to name a couple I really like), but for me, Gilmour and Green are a class apart.
I actually thought it was a bit boring, aside from the very revealing stuff about his parents. Too much Polly, too much sitting around in fields having picnics with his family. All very lovely but not that interesting for most of us. As a side note, too much bloody Yentob as well, but that's the hazardous byproduct of any programme that the overpaid egotist Yentob makes.
Not talking about the Floyd was a mistake, because it is, whether DG likes it or not, the part of his life that defines his reputation as a musician and artist. Although he is still the world's greatest living guitarist, his best work was done in collaboration with his old sparring partner (you remember him, the tall miserable bassist bloke), not his current wife.
I have struggled to articulate how I felt about the programme. Spot on Kevin; I agree with every word.
Another in agreement with Kevin. I had no idea that he had had "issues" with his parents. I guess we had enough of that from Rog. Although having said that he (Rog) at least made a brilliant album from it. And a couple of tours. And then repeat 30 years later.
Great group, pity about Charlie, Gilmours son "Dark Side of a Loon"
Finally got around to watching this (I'm always recording stuff and neglecting to watch it). On the whole I thought it was okay, if a bit slow-paced. Thought Yentob a bit sycophantic, and rather more of Polly than needed. Liked his Alsatian, particularly the bit where the dog decides to follow the family in their canoes but jumping into the river and swimming after them. Anyway, Gilmore seems a lot more easy-going than Waters.

Never understimate his steel Mike - Roger Waters did, and look where that got him. Oddly enough, both of them are quite similar in a way, both have huge egos and are classic control freaks, both are perfectionists, and both were, at different points (1967/8 and 1985-7) completely understimated by those around them; and, of course both of of them needed their erstwhile musical partners to do their best work.
