Speaker Advice

Posted by: Music Man on 11 November 2015

Hi,

I currently have a Systemdek IIX with a Month-3 arm & am having it fully serviced. Will replace the glass platter with a 10mm SRM acrylic one and intend to use a puck.  Cartridge will be Ortofon Bronze (decided against Black due to cost & its probably OTT for the current deck).

Naim NAC-82, Hi-Cap

Naim NAP-250

Naim CDX-2

Epos-11 speakers and REL Strata II active sub.

I have a plan to replace the Systemdek with an LP-12 Ittok, Lingo so I'm hoping the front end will be as good as I need.

In the meantime, I think my speakers are the weak link here: I'm after a big 3D soundstage, but with plenty of detail - hence the Ortofon Bronze - I really liked its sound.

Can anyone advise what speakers might fit the bill?  I have a preference for floor-standers now & will hopefully no longer need the REL to support the bottom-end.

Thanks!

My Scansonic MB 2.5 offer a large 3D soundstage especially for their size. MB 6 is coming soon which should offer more low end take a look at Raidho if you have the cash to afford them.

With that amplifier, a pair of SBLs would be the perfect speaker, though sound staging is not their strongest suit. But as effective musical communicators they are hard to beat. If a big soundstage is the top priority, PMC twenty.23s would be well worth trying. Of course, you may have a larger budget, and some parameters around that would help people make appropriate suggestions.

I am using Proac D30R Speakers with my Supernait2. Excellent for detail with and with good soundstage for a Naim Amp. Should be even better with your 250. Expensive I know but I concider them worth it.

IMO speaker choice is ultimately down to what you are able to demo in your own listening room because of the effect on the sound you actually from your listening position.

If you can demo Kudos speakers where you live FME the Super 20's will work a treat with your amps and proposed LP12 kit.

The Focal 1208's worked quite well at my dealer's but were extremely boomy in my own room; as I said - home demo is mandatory.

Hmm..  Alternative ideas. Power supplies. XPS your CDX2 and either add another HiCap to your 82, or get a SuperCap.

I have 82-HC-HC  and CDX2-XPS.

If you like the Kudos sound you could also try the C30s. Not many pairs around now but I moved from C20s to C30s and really enjoy the additional bass (with a 252/250) providing only that you can give them a little room to breathe. The Seas Crescendo tweeter in the top Kudos speakers gives tremendous detail but is also refined with the right matching amp.

If you want a big soundstage with pace and strong timbre, try to audition some Shahinian Arcs.

Try audition some panels (Quad, Martin Logan, Magnepan) - you'll never look back...

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.  For now, I will invest in improving the NAC-82 with a Supercap and the CDX-2 with an improved power supply; either a re-purposed Hi-Cap from the 82, or as suggested, an XPS for the CDX2.  I'll need to wait until my new office is finished until I delve into speakers as I think you are right: I ready need to audition speakers in the room they will be used it.

This way, I think I will have got my front-end as sorted as it can realistically be, before I work down-stream.

Many thanks for your valuable thoughts & suggestions.
