Possible Rogue Network

Posted by: Mr Paws on 12 November 2015

Hi to all,

Two days ago I was having some issues with my WiFi mainly signal strength to my PC.

I decided to go for a wired connection through my powerlines which was what I had set up with my old PC but this proved to be a a pain getting it to work. I decided to go back to wireless a few times and then try again to go wired but no joy there. OK so back to wireless and some ten networks appear on the screen on saying 'naimusic1' and one calling itself 'Naim network' . Mm very strange I thought but then again i thought I had another naimee living very close?

Afer a while i grew a bit suspicious and (I know I shouldn't have) I typed my password into this 'Naim Network and hey I'm connected !!  So I quickly removed this network and reconnected to my usual network.

What's strange though is the 'rogue' network has a far better signal strength than my existing one so I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on what's going on here? Has anyone had the same issues similar to me?

Surely it's not possible for someone to be able to hack into my router and set another network up ? I been using this same network for around eight years with no real problems except for the usual congestion now and again.

I'd shut down and restart the computer and network, then turn the network back on followed by the computer. Sounds more like a computer glitch than a hacking attempt to me.

Also, choose a channel as far away as possible from any "real" neighbouring wifi networks.

Its perfectly possible to hack into someone's router and add a secondary wireless network.  But why would you do so?

Log into your router and check the SSID - what do you see?

When you say "My Password"  what password is this to?

Hard wired is the best option & power lines whilst they work are not a great idea.  Wireless will work but not very well.
