Upgrade path ?

Posted by: Evren Akar on 12 November 2015

Hi everbody,

I have SN1 + HC ( without DR)

S-600 ovator

ND5xs

please advise me to my next upgrade ?

I know there are to many options but first which one do you think ?

Add a power supply to ND5XS, or consider NDX?

I think I'd do that before considering changes to the amplification.

Cheaper alternatives would be to consider powerline or hi-line.

Evren, I'd be looking at a source upgrade.  Book in with your dealer to hear some options; from adding a PSU to the ND5xs to an NDX, or even an NDS.

Gavin and Richard thanks for your comments.

ı just book with my dealer to hear the difference of nd5xs with Xp5 Xs Power Supply and NDX.

a few months ago I test nd5xs and NDX. NDX is clearly better ( these are my options) lets see the result with PSU + ND5xs and NDX.

As ı know the dacs are different and also others diffenreces too but lets listen and make decisions.

I added a xps2 dr to my nd5xs and it transformed it.
I did not try xp5xs as I want to upgrade to ndx so went straight to xps.

There are quite a few NDX owners who preferred to upgrade the DAC rather than the PSU, with either the Naim DAC or others. This is also possible with the ND5XS. So there are some more options to complicate things for you!

For now ı think ı have two options. NDX or ND5xs + XP5xs power supply.

my dear told me that, there are two different things. NDX is more melancholic, ND5xs + XP5xs power supply more muscular. of course NDX+XP5xs power supply is different but ı am trying to compare  NDX or ND5xs + XP5xs power supply.

Basing the reply on my own experience rather than on theory, I'd say DR-ing the HiCap.

@Evren - You have a good dealer.

Evren, the issue with your system, as I see it, is that neither the source nor the amp are good enough for the speakers. A really good source can, however, mitigate weaknesses in the amplifier, so if it was me I would add an XPS DR to the ND5xs and then move to an NDX or NDS. Alternatively you could go for the NDX and later add a good DAC to it. Down the road a switch to a Supernait 2 as a minimum would be a good plan.

Source upgrade by either power supply or source higher in hierarchy...

Good stuff Evren. Please let us know what you find. As Richard says, an NDS also makes sense with the quality of your amplification and speakers.

Evren,

I have ND5 XS, which I upgraded by adding XP5 XS, with very beneficial results. Much better soundstage, much lower noise floor.

But then I added a Chord Hugo, and have since dispensed with the XP5 XS.

ND5 XS + (in my case) Hugo, is markedly better than ND5 XS + XP5 XS. There are other DACs around, but this is the step which made a colossal difference to me. I may one day upgrade the ND5 XS to NDX (still with the Hugo) but I'm very happy with my source at the moment.

Incidentally, given my amplifiers, it has been argued that my source end is the weak link. I strongly disagree.

(Now, sit back and wait for the anti-Hugo brigade to step in...)

Hi Evren

As HH intimated, if you are going to build a system around your Ovator S600 speakers, then sooner or later both source & amplifier will have to change, if you want long-term musical satisfaction.

That being the case, you may be aiming at an NDX with XPS-DR (or NDX + a DAC, or NDS + power supply) as a source.  All of which leads towards an NDX, XPS-DR  or both as being the way to go, unless you can afford to jump straight to NDS + power supply.

Hope this helps, FT

I am going to build a system around my Ovator S600 speakers.

So as ı understand(from nick peacock and foot tapper comments) my way is going to NDS+XPS-DR or in addition to this my be a new dac.

for now ı can not buy NDS + XPS-DR. also ND5xs + XP5xs power supply upgrading is not very useful for me. because at the and ı have to sell both of them. may be for now upgrading to NDX seems better. later ı can add power supply to it and then change my amp with supernait 2.

may be in this time naim can make a new network streamer called ND555

Hi Evren

This makes a lot of sense.

Better still though, talk it through with your dealer and take a listen to a couple of options before making your final decision.  This might even align with Richard's recommendation above!

Happy listening, FT

My system is similar to yours - SN1 with nonDR HC, fed by Sonos Connect via NDAC, sent into PMC GB1s.

I was initially wooed by the idea of trading the lot in for 272/250DR , but now thinking the addition of an XPS-DR maybe makes more sense, and maybe a DR upgrade on the HC.

The NDAC doesn't get much of a mention on the upgrade paths at the moment but I am quite fond of it, and the Sonos interface on iPad or iPhone is hard to beat.

Good as the GB1 is, it is hardly an Ovator 600, so the situation is entirely different. The SN and GB are a nice match, but the SN and 600 - not so much.

Good enough to warrant an XPS-DR or do you think they need addressing first?

Posted on: 13 November 2015 by Christopher_M

Plenty good enough.

In your profile you write, "PMC GB1s biwired Chord Odyssey". Have you tried them single wired?

No I haven't. The speakers and Odyssey4 cables predate my Supernait, had an Arcam bi-amp setup hence the cable choice. My dealer suggested leaving the jumpers on the speakers and fitted plugs which allowed both amp end wires to fit together, creating  effectively single wire system.

Congratulations Evren!  I have enjoyed my NDS for several years, and could not ask for more from a digital source. To my ears, it has just the right blend of detail and musicality.

Just for fun, you might enjoy reading the NDS review by Robert Harley of The Absolute Sound. It is easily found by Google.

So you went in thinking NDX or XP5xs and came out with  NDS and XPS.   That's a really good dealer!

David

PS: Only teasing.   We've all been there, and I would love to have your system.   Enjoy it!
