Upgrade to s400's from arrivas

Posted by: hank on 14 November 2015

Hi all, more advice would be appreciated, my system is cdxs, powered by flatcap x2, to ndac, pre is nac 122x and power amp is 150x, arriva speakers. To upset the appple cart straight away i have tried a pair of sbls and preferred my arrivas, i am now Wondering if i should buy some second hand s400s or would i be better with a 282, or xps for the dac

I made the same move from the arrivas to s400 a year or so ago with absolutely no regrets at all!

I use them with a 202/200 and it's great! it was a really good upgrade and I can't see I will ever change them.  it's a totally different league as you would expect from the price tags. The s400 took a while to settle in but I couldn't be happier. I managed to get £350 for the old speakers on a private sale which helped.

The only hitch is whether or not the 150x is powerful enough or not, and you need to test this first!

The s400's take 2 people to unwrap and set up so home demo which is so essential with speakers isn't  that easy. They are really a lot bigger than the arrivas and borrowing them to try quite tricky i should think. I use mine in a 5x4 m room and they do dominate the room visually - my wife is quite patient….

Good luck

Hi,

On their site, Naim used to recommend Nait XS as suitable for the S400s and 202/ 200 for the S600s. I think you will be fine with your existing electronics.

The BMR tech changes everything, certainly given my experience of a Rega Brio-R driving their RS10s. With the usual caveats about room size, preferred listening volume etc, BMR seems to question the need for elaborate power amps. But like any speaker they will respond to source improvements. (a thinly veiled XPS hint, if you still feel the itch after the S400s).
