New job

Posted by: TomK on 14 November 2015

After having been made redundant three and a half years ago and having had a prolonged period of ill health meantime I am soon to be back in the world of employment. 30th November in fact I'm to be Database Manager with the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. I'm grateful for their show of faith in a 61 year old character and I'm determined to repay their faith in me. About time people realised that getting a bit older doesn't mean you lose your abilities, ambitions, marbles and so on.

I can't wait and I'm shitting myself at the same. Wish me luck!

Tom,

Being eight years your junior and in a job with some physical demands, I can appreciate where you're at. Best wishes for your health and good luck with your new job. Show 'em the grey hairs got some life experience to offer the workplace!

Good luck - at 58 I worry incessantly about getting laid off (which appears to be coming at some point in our company as they are outsourcing a lot to India) and not being able to find a job due to age.

I will never forget a talk I had with a boss of mine at Nortel back in 2000.  I was 40 and he was a 54 year old black man, who had lived through the 60s and I am sure saw his unfair share of racism.  We were discussing racism and I said that being white, I could only appreciate it from the "outside." He asked me "How old are you?"  I told him I was 40, to which he responded, "Oh just wait about ten or so years and you will get it from age, and that's almost worse, because it's allowed."  Coming form him that was a mouthful.

So I am glad you are able to beat the odds!

We are grounded at the moment due to weather, so I am whileing away the next hour browsing the forum. Ageism doesn't seem to be a problem here. We have four full-time instructors aged 80, 74, 69 and 45. The two air-traffic controllers are each 55 and the three admin ladies are 65, 65 and 55.

Our part-time instructors run from 25 to 40, so we can't be accused of under-ageism either

Tom, experience helps, but its all down to performance once you're in. Enjoy !

Yes, good luck from me too Tom. It's difficult to get back into working when you've been away from it for a while but within a day or so you'll wonder why you worried.

Congratulations - great that you got that chance. Is also motivating for people who consider their job to be a given.....

Good for you, Tom. I'm sure they are absolutely right to put their faith in you.

Congratulations, Tom. I hope it goes well.  As I said when speaking recently at the retirement do of a colleague aged 63, an employer usually finds it fairly easy to replace skills and effort but it is much, much harder to replace experience.  There are no short cuts to that and it is often a USP we older workers offer.

Still trying to suss out the geography of the place but it's probably in one of the buildings you can see in the background.

And thanks for the good wishes folks.
