Uniti connecting Linn Axis

Posted by: Swans1912 on 15 November 2015

I've finally got round to servicing my late brothers Linn Axis and need to connect to my Uniti. The turntable has two male RCA phonos and the earthing connection. What type if connector do I need to hook up to the Uniti and what happens to the earthing connection?

You need a phono stage to amplify the turntable output to a level that the amp can handle. You normally connect the earth to this as well.

You will need a phono stage. This equalises and amplifies the very low level signal that comes from the cartridge.  Naim make the Stageline for this purpose - N for MM cartridges and S, K, or E for MC cartridges.  Your Uniti has a powered input socket that can directly power the Stageline and take in the equalised and amplified signal.

What is the cartridge on your Axis turntable?

Thanks both. Wow I wasn't expecting that! I have an old Linn K9 but was thinking of treating myself to Linn Adikt. The rest of my equipment is NAP 200 and B&W PM1 speakers plus Cambridge Audio Blu ray used as source for SACD.

OK, for either cart you would use a Stageline N.

Thanks Richard. Does the Stageline come with the connector you need to attach to the Uniti. If not what would you recommend?

I believe the Stageline comes with an interconnect that will connect it to your Uniti. This supplies power to the Stageline as well as the audio signal to the Uniti. If you don't want to spend that much money, there are quite a few non-Naim options around, for example, I used a Rega Fono to good effect.

Thanks Chris. My other system is Rega Plannar 3 / Cyrus based so would like to keep with Naim for this system. Looks like my budget for a new cartridge will go on the Stageline! Thanks again to you both for your assistance.

If your K9 is in good condition, I'm sure it will be fine with the Axis. Hope you enjoy it.
