NDX iRadio dropouts on BBC Radio 3 HLS

Posted by: dsc on 18 November 2015

On a number of occasions recently (only the last week or two) I have experienced momentary dropouts when listening to the BBC Radio 3 HLS service on my NDX. The NDX has the latest firmware (4.4). No dropouts occur when playing music stored on my NAS, indicating that there is no fault on my home network. My Internet access is via BT Infinity / BT HomeHub 5 at a speed of 39 Mbit/s.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Yes it happens,  I've had it on a number of stations, Radio Paradise, the BBC's, Linn etc .......

Its not only a Naim issue,  other streamers such as Sonos, Logitech & Mac  plus internet services have the same chat subject(s) on the www forum & blog's.

There is supposition that streams get turned off occasionally to free up bandwidth;  I'm not sure about that,  but who knows.

I have never seen my NDX show a buffering issue just prior to a shut down & it might not be a buffering issue anyway - all my BBC HLS & the 320kbs stations I use are always 100% buffer.

Thanks for your reply, Mike. It's good to know that I'm not alone. I had wondered if it was an as yet unreported problem with the 4.4 firmware.

I'm testing a new firmware release that has changed something in the buffer to address a Tidal issue.  Ya never know, it might help iRadio - provided that is that turning off www streams to get bandwidth back is only a myth.

I noticed momentary breaks, half a second or less every few minutes I would say, on Radio 3 FM on my SuperUniti a week or so back. After putting up with it for a couple of days (but only listening now and then), I restarted the SU and the problem vanished.  I don't know how the internals of the radio module are arranged but sometimes a restart does fix weird problems in Naim units just like any other piece of complex electronics.

Might be worth trying this with any iradio breaks too.

best
