PMC 24 or 26

Posted by: CharlieP56 on 24 November 2015

I am the happy new owner of an N272 with 250DR. I have a pair of PMC Twenty 24s on demo and they sound amazing, they work really well in my current room where my old Focal 726s were unable to cope. I have a nagging thought that maybe I am missing something in the midrange and available volume by not having the 26s and perhaps those would be a better future proof investment in case I move somewhere bigger.

Problem is I am not in the UK and the local dealer is limited in what he can demo. I would have to take a punt on the 26s which would take up to 4 weeks to arrive.

All thoughts and experiences welcome.

Charlie, that would be one serious punt. For that money I would plan a trip (or wait till one crops up) where you can have a listen. I had to hang on for years before a business trip gave me the chance to demo stuff.

The 26s have a significantly larger bass unit and produce a much larger sound. They could, depending on your room, push it over the top. The similarly priced Fact 8 may give you what you are after and they have dip switches on the back to adjust the hf and lf for your room. If I had to do a punt I would go that rout. But my gosh what a punt. Let us know how it plays out.

Never heard the 26 but have the 24 with that combo. I upgraded from a SuperUniti and in my room had to move the speakers further into the room due to the increase in bass. Sounds amazing now though. I would consider the 26 if I had the spare cash but would have to give them a very good listen in my room first. No way I would buy blind it may not be a simple case of the same but better.

As an example I demoed the 23 and the 24 when I got mine and they were quite different in character with the 24s being much warmer and a little less revealing..

I haven't heard the 24s but I had a home audition of both the 26s and the Fact.8s for a week each. I decided on the Fact.8s in the end, although I loved them both and it was a real toss-up to choose. A deciding factor might be the type of music you mostly listen to. For rock/pop you might prefer the 26s, whereas for classical you might prefer the Fact.8s. Whichever (PMC speakers) you choose, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Thanks all for the replies, all good common sense The 24 demo is delivering everything I hoped for so why risk nearly double the money unheard (I can get the 24 at an ex demo price so the 26 are far short of double over here). I do listen to a lot of classical and the Fact 8 shouldnt be ignored but my mind is made up after another evening listening and thoroughly enjoying the 24.

I will also mention I had ordered a Naim frame based on what I had read and that arrived after breaking everything in for a month. I still cant work out how it makes such a difference but it really does. The Focal 726 were listenable before I set it up but then they couldnt cope. No issue with the 24.

With the money not required to get the 26, you can get an XPS dr. It's a win-win situation....

Like the logic. OT but are we allowed to talk about alternative PS options (I am guessing not!)

You guessed right! But the XPS DR makes such a wonderful improvement I see no need to look elsewhere.
