Another iMac problem, maybe?

Posted by: BigH47 on 24 November 2015

For some reason my iMac is refusing to log on to iStore or Facetime.

A dialogue box asks me to log on with Apple ID I enter the required password, click sign in and the rotating icon keeps on rotating. I can't quit Apple store either, I have to use system monitor to close it down.

I reset my Apple ID but no difference.

iPhone, iPad and MacMini all accepted new AppleID P/W.

Hmm .. odd coincidence .. I hate coincidences, but, when I got up this morning my iPhone was indicating it needed me to enter my Apple ID so it could complete its iCloud backup.  I entered the ID and the phone froze up .. a reboot seemed to fit it.  MacBook Pros, iPads and the bride's iPhone all working normally .. as I say, odd.

It could be malware.

Try changing your Apple password. This worked for me when my wife had this problem on her iPhone and iPad.

For the last few months I've been plagued by requests for login passwords for Mail, iCloud, iTunes etc. For this, and other reasons too tedious to recount, OSX is beginning to look like a poor version of Windows 98. I really do NOT want to go from Apple back to Windows PC stuff, but as time goes by, I have to question weather or not the massive price difference can be justified.

I went through a series of issues with Appleid passwords about a year ago, my mistake was thinking that the @me.com and the @mac.com variants of the applid needed two separate passwords. I was wrong they are the same and therefore have the same password.

Another area of confusion was the addition of family members to the Appleid each with their own apppleid and password. I have this area working but I think I should improve the way it works.

Apple have also added an extra level of security and will ask for the security code of the credit card that is associated with the Appleid for purchasing from the various online and real stores.  If you do not have this specific credit card with you and cannot remember the security card, it can be a nuisance.

I seem to remember an irritating problem with both the iTunes and App stores - there was some sort of conflict between .mac and .me, together with the fact that I have separate accounts for different country stores (don't ask). After much searching the Apple discussions  boards, I think the solution required me  to log out of all devices (static and portable), clear the .plist files for the stores (option click Go in Finder to access Library files) and then restart. I then relogged into the iTunes store and I think everything sorted itself out.

It could be that there was a step where you deauthorise and then reauthorise the Mac for the store. I do find the Apple forums to be quite a mine of useful (and some useless) information, even if it takes time to scour threads. Things have been helped by the fact that solutions are not hot-linked to queries.

I did have a search of the forums but couldn't see anything, maybe a more in depth search is required.

I find many searches fails because of a slightly wrongly worded question.

Google either gives millions of choices or a very few.

OK I did find this answer but don't understand what it is going to do.

Any advice? Should I do as it says?:-

Quote from Apple Support Communities.

"This worked out for me too.

  1. Opened KeyChain Access app from the Launcher
  2. Selected "Certificates" in the left panel
  3. Sorted by name so all the Verisign ones were grouped
  4. Deleted the ones with "login" in the final column and "Verisign" in the name
  5. Quit KeyChain Access
  6. Restarted the Mac

This fixed an inability to connect to the App Store, an inability to connect to the iTunes store (multiple servers), and inability to connect to some SSL (https address) websites depending on the browser (especially in Safari). Plus email browsing in Apple Mail now shows inline images (which were likely to have been https references and so prey to the same problem as in Safari)."

Big H,

i would very very cautious of trying to change the Keychain and/or Library files unless you are cofident of being able to recover your system from a backup.

I would repair permissions from the Recovery Partition (Command and R) while rebooting gives you access to the Disk Utility within the Recovery Partition.   Repair permissions is an option from Disk Utility.

If this does not fix it, then a Genious appointment at your local Apple store or reseller.

Thanks Jude as I suspected. I'll have a chat with the guys in the local apple store.
