Twonky woes
Posted by: ardbeg57 on 25 November 2015
Hi all
I have a Superuniti and a Unitiserve, controlling them using the naim app on iPad/phone.
I have MND which has progressed and can no longer use either. I am now reliant on tobii eye-gaze technology but this only runs on a Windows 8 device. I’ve installed Twonky on the tablet. It sees both pieces of Naim kit no problem but although it can play entire albums from the US locally on the tablet, I can only play albums as single tracks through the SU. A bit of an inconvenience with Mahler 5 but a royal pain with a Ramones album.
Any help very gratefully received.
Kevin
Hi Kevin
this is something I cannot help with directly and I see the problem - the Naim apps will only run on iOS or android, yet your software only runs on Windows. I suggest you contact Naim directly for advice - there may be a way to get the app running on Windows through some sort of emulation program. You can email at info@naimaudio.com or call them. Good luck - you need to get those Ramones albums playing in sequence ASAP!
Instead of using the Unitiserve as a UPnP server, as I assume you are doing now, you could connect it to the SU via SPDIF cable. You would then control playback from through the Unitiserve, which can be done from a desktop computer. This doesn't have a volume control though, and would only control iRadio and UPnP from the Unitiserve. Not ideal, but maybe better that nothing?
Presumably, you only use a Windows computer - there's a 3rd party app called QuteControl which allows basic control of a Naim streamer but unfortunately I think it's a Mac only app. I believe there's also something called Namote for Windows, but as a Mac user, I have no experience of it.
Thinking laterally about this, one way forward might be to join all the separate tracks of an album into one file. So when you select the single track the whole album is played.
From a quick google there are software packages that look as if they will do this joining. I appreciate that you would need to get someone to do that for you and I have no idea whether your circle of friends and support includes someone able and willing to do that.
I agree it would be worth emailing Naim support to see whether they have any ideas. Also there are lots of people here using different server software, so maybe someone using Twonky has some suggestions......
Best

If you're going to consider using an emulator, I'm fairly sure there's a better chance of success using an Android emulator than an iOS one, as there are more of them to choose from, and they have, I think, more functionality than the iOS ones. Apple don't like to share anything if they can help it.

Unfortunately I don't think there's anything practical that we can do to provide a solution ...
ChrisSU has the best answer we can think of as we know of no windows compatible UPnP client that will be able to correctly drive a UPnP queue...
Cheers

Hi Chris,
I think you'll not have much luck on this path - but hooking the SU up to the UnitiServe via S/PDIF and using Desktop Client is probably the best workaround...

Phil, I admit the emulator idea was just a stab in the dark on my part, as I've never actually used one. I guess the main problem with the Desktop Client is that as far as I'm aware, like N-Serve for Mac, it has no volume control?
