Ways to control Naim Uniti 2 playback

Posted by: PawelP76 on 27 November 2015

Hello everyone.

I'm new here, going to get myself a new streaming hifi equipment and thinking about two items: Naim Uniti 2 or Linn Majik DSM.

Each one has its pros and cons but I'm interested in the way Uniti 2 is controlled.

Tried to find similar thread but haven't, maybe should have looked harder...

The selling point for me is that the Uniti has a USB port for mass storage devices and can be controlled using the front panel. As I have young children and don't want them to use any sort of android/iOS device, ability to change tracks using the front panel or a remote control is appealing.

Therefore I have a few questions I would appreciate some of you could answer.

1) Does Uniti support any kind of a playlist stored on a USB device (pendrive)?

2) Are playlists available via front panel/remote or are they only available on the Naim application?

3) If a playlist is playing, started from the app, is it possible to change tracks within the list using the remote or the front panel?

4) When a playlist is playing and the application is turned off, does the player carry on playing the list content or does it stop? Is the list stored on the device and shared across control devices or is it application (and device) specific?

I'll be greatful for any input

Thanks

Pawel

The USB socket is for an iPod or a USB stick. It is not for connecting a large drive.

I would not recommend using the front panel or remote as a means of control on a regular basis. The system comes into its own via the app, which makes operation a pleasure rather than a pain.

If you get a uniti, get an iPad, it's as simple as that. And store your music on a nas.

If you are worried about the children using an iPad, simply set it to lock when not in use.

You can use a Uniti without the app, but it's easier with it!

1) You can play from a USB stick, but you'll just see a basic list of tracks that you can play and that's about it. The USB input is really a convenience thing for connecting iPhones etc. You really want your music files on a NAS which the Uniti will find on your network.

2) If playlists are stored on a NAS, you can navigate and play them via the front panel/remote, as well as search by album, artist etc.

3) So you are going to use the app when the kids aren't looking?! Yes, you can switch between app control and remote control whenever you want.

4) You can turn off the app, and play will continue. You can control playlists from the remote.

In addition to storing playlists on a NAS, you can create playlists on the app. These are separate playlists stored locally on the iOS device. You only have basic control of these with the remote, such as volume/pause/next/stop.

Whilst many people use iOS devices, I use a cheap Android tablet and it's fine, it basically does the same thing, it just looks slightly different.

In respect of playlists, the app downloads the current playlist in use into the Uniti's internal memory for playback, and then everything is controlled by the Uniti itself.  The app, the remote handset and the front panel controls just tell the Uniti what to do with the tracks on the playlist that's in its own memory.

Before getting the tablet I used the remote handset for quite some time; personally I found it quite OK, but the tablet interface is better.

USB port is rather for convenience when someone comes by with music files and is not willing to put their files (probably bought) on the NAS :-).

I currently don't have any iOS/Android tablet, maybe will get a cheap Android device just for that.
And knowing (from other parents) how addictive a tablet can be for a toddler I'll do my best to keep him (them) away from the temptation.

Just went through the section 8.3 of the user manual and it looks like playlists need to be created and provided by a UPnP server. I couldn't find such option in the Synology's default multimedia server. Should I look better or it doesn't have it and requires other UPnP server software?

I'm evaluating options before making the decision which one to buy. My Linn dealer is trying to get Uniti 2 to make audition of Majik DSM and Uniti 2 possible. And since he's the Linn dealer I would be surprised if he had such knowledge about Uniti 2.
Linn allows to create playlists which are stored on the device. Then it's possible to select a playlist and navigate through it using the remote and find it convenient.

You can save playlists (M3U and WPL)  in the music folder of a Synology NAS and they will be made available through UPnP by the Synology Media Server.
