200 lost its mojo

I think my 200 on the SL2 mid/bass is due for a service: it's from 2003, has never been serviced afaik, and is clearly inferior to a newer 200 I've compared it with, delivering much less scale and grunt than the newer 200.
My question is what specific kind of service is necessary: will a "general" service be sufficient or is there a specific recapping service for the 200? And can it be expected that the 200 will sound as new afterwards?
A service will include a re cap, and is the most imortant part of the service, and yes it will come back like a new unit. I assume you are not comparing it to a DR 200?.
No, the other 200 is not a DR version. And thanks, it seems that a service is a good idea then.
It might be a good idea to recap both at the same time, then you'll know that everything is balanced. How old is the other one?
The other 200 is from 2002, but it had to be rebuilt 2013 after a short circuit on the board, so it's in fact quite new. I assume a slight difference of two years between the amps should be tolerable.
I bought a 10yo Nap200 from a Naim dealer and had them send it straight out for service, without me even listening to it. I didn't want its performance to be compromised in any way when I put it into my set. The engineer who serviced it listed the parts used and told me it was much more than a recap. Delighted with it.

Just wanted to report back that the service really was worth the money. The serviced 200 is now driving the tweeters which, before the service, sounded rather dull, so it drove the mid/bass. Now, after service, the treble has all the sparkle that can be wished for. And the Akurate DSM/1 on demo is sounding fabulous too...
I had my 200 serviced by AVoptions back in August. The bass had been getting boomy and the whole unit sounded sloppy .. for want of a better word.
On return the unit sounded immediately better until about a month later when one day it sounded remarkably better and has stayed that way since .. a wonderful workhorse. I just love its pep and verve.

Looked at your profile, I assume you're Active! Snaxo 242 / 2 x 200's / SL2's
Also, you mentioned "Within five years: ADSM/0 -> ADSM/1, replace 2x200 with 2x250""
If this is the case, seems like a perfect time for an Wonky Active System!
Sale your 200 at bargain discount rate, and let the buyer get it serviced.
Then pick up a bargain priced 2014/2015 250 with full warranty, they're out there, then wait and save your money, while listing your 2013 serviced 200!
Just a thought!!!!
The Armchair QB!!!
Well, some time in the future I will have to go "wonky" active. Replacing both 200s with two 250s at the same time is hardly affordable.
But source first, it seems the DSM needs an upgrade.

That's my point sell your 200, which needs servicing, that will give you some cash to apply towards an late model 250. And you are Wonky, Now!
2013 200 on the tweeters
2014/2015 250 on the Mid/Woofers
Switch them around, and see which you like best!
Saving cash is the key!
Its some one out there looking for a deal on a depressed 200.
List it on Ebay, Audiogon, Canuck, every where, doesn't cost a penny to list, but eBay will take 10% after the sale!
Good Luck!!!!!
