NDX old or new?

Posted by: blownaway on 02 December 2015

A new NDX is just out of my price range and so I've been focused on the new NAC 272 (w/200DR/250DR) for streaming chores.

I have seen a few used NDX's on the market that give me pause.

Have their been many changes to the NDX old vs new or is it only/mostly just software changes over the past several years.  If it's software based then that would be easy to update and away we go.

What do you think? thanks

My research shows that the NDX went through a 192khz streaming board upgrade in 2012, then a rs232 port to usb for update followed by a cosmetic change in the display. Now BT is included.

There should not be any more changes but who knows if Naim makes changes to internal components.

I have always wondered if the new NDX still uses the BB 1791A DAC since this DAC has been obsoleted. The 272 uses 1792A now.

I bought an ex dem one that was discounted due to not having Bluetooth. That's the only thing missing. Saved me the price of my NAS and two SSDs.

I recently puchased an ex demo 2014 NDX at a considerable saving on new the only only dfference between this and a new one is Bluetooth which I don't need, having used it for a few months it is undoubtedly the best bit of kit I have ever used in fact I have bought more CD'S and stored the in my NAS over the last 3 months than the last 3 years it's that good?

Thanks for the reply's everyone.  I haven't found my ideal NDX yet and don't want to wait.  I'll be ordering the 272/200/250 for now.

The big change was the move to 192kHz, although many will have been since fitted with the updated hardware.  The USB port is basically just cosmetic - if you have an RS232 then a USB adaptor gives you the same thing.  The latest units have Bluetooth onboard.  Apart from the hands free box in my car I'm not sure I ever use Bluetooth for anything, and my experience of listening to some demos of Bluetooth audio is that it's best to find another way of routing audio - any other way!
