Making NAP 250 and Hugo TT Harder to Steal

Posted by: andrewnielsen on 02 December 2015

Such an undignified question, but anyway. I have bought a 250, and will look at a TT, for my office system. People come and go from the office and a decorative plate in the waiting room was stolen a year ago. Any ideas? I can drill a hole in the concrete floor and put in a Dynabolt or two. I can also drill holes in unobtrusive places in my desk. I wonder if clamping a Naim amp would affect the sound? Thanks in advance for your help.

As I noted in an earlier post, people seem to be a little reluctant to answer my questions. Perhaps it is the old green-eyed monster raising its ugly head over my main system. To be honest, if I post pics it will probably only make the problem worse.

If you have serious concerns over your work system being stolen I wouldn't bring in gear I was worried about losing. Enjoy your main system. No envy here.

My office setup is: iFi iUSB Power-> iFi iPurifier -> Bel Canto m-Link USB to SPDIF converter -> iFi Micro iDSD DAC (preamp mode) -> Headline 2 w/3rd party PSU -> Audeze LCD-X. The source is my work laptop (w/JRiver) which comes home with me.

I bought an Ikea PS Media Cabinet that has locking doors. It fits under the L section of my desk. All but the Headline 2 is stored in the cabinet. The Headline is quite small and unobtrusive and fits on my desk within an under-monitor riser/storage cubby. I put a "light-dim" removable sticker over the Headline's green led to make it even less noticable.

Of course, there's still some level of risk. It wouldn't take anything more than a screwdriver to force open the doors of the Ikea cabinet. Though I believe  that with the system out of sight for the most part, the risk is pretty low in my particular office. On the other hand, I wouldn't personally feel comfortable with substantially more expensive gear in the office.

Easy. Grab a couple of your NAP S1's from home. Bolt your 250 to one and Hugo to the other. They'll be too heavy for anyone to walk off with.

A webcam?

No solution for this problem

Build a metal "cage" to loosley cover the amp. The cage can be bolted to the desk.

Ask your insurance company and then post any response here. I dont believe that bolting the 250 is a good idea, but in an office you are already in a compromised listening space so it might be an appropriate solution.

i can understand that a decorative plate could get stolen, if of normal dimensions, as a thief could just mask it with a garment but you need some biceps to shlepp off with a 250 and a TT. On that basis, if the thief wants it that badly they'll take it as and when and not just during opening hours, I imagine.

How do you secure your computer equipment?

Put it in a lockable cabinet.  If you're really worried then secure the cabinet to the wall with expansion bolts.

Or padded cell (forum of course!)

I once had a commemorative plate stolen (mummy bear reading to her two cubs by candlelight) German, irreplaceable, I've never really gotten over it. Music helps though.

You're permitted a hi-fi in your office

Due the styling, or lack of, in the high-end audio industry, anyone not in the know would dismiss a NAP 250 as some piece of rubbish anyway.  As for the TT, what would any normal person do with it?  Unless your office has a lot of audiophile types passing by, I suspect most would prefer to steal the pot plant in reception.

Headphones - np!

Small speakers - np!

Ginormous skull-rattling subwoofers - perhaps skating on the edge...

Urm not sure I agree with that.  Certainly back in the 70/80s a lot of hi-fi was pretty utilitarian but I think Naim stuff amongst others these days is aesthetically very good.

Well, while a stack of grey boxes may look great to some, including me, because I am at least part geek, I doubt they are very appealing for many......wives for example.  I like the fact that the effort goes into the engineering inside and time not wasted on anything other than making them look inoffensive.  With my non-geek hat on, inoffensive is the best I could say about most hifi from a purely aesthetic point of view.

I suspect it will sound a lot better clamped, or drilled and chained to something heavy, than it would in the back of some oik's car.  Putting it in a lockable cabinet, as suggested above, seems like the easiest solution though

I have my NAC S1 x 3, SNAXO 363 x 4, Bridged NAP S1 x 32 to Linn briks x 8 secured in my castle that is surrounded by a moat filled with sharks. To gain entry one must climb up Rapunzel's hair and slay the dragon that is in my dedicated listening room. Would any green eyed monsters like to see pics of my estate?

Your description reminds me of an old computer game for the BBC model B 'Castle Quest'. I never completed it, so never got to see the wonderous hi-fi within

Yes please Minh!

Andrew, Richard has made a most practical suggestion.

If this is not a viable option for you, then I would recommend buying a pair of very large horn speakers, then hiding the electronics inside the bass horns. Living voice make some suitable and affordable horn speakers to suit. That should be perfectly fine, simple too.

Best regards, FT

This is my pet shark Hugo. He is mortified to learn that I will be replacing him with DAVE

Looks like you live just down the road from me Minh.  I must say I thought the carp were looking  pretty big last time I was there...

Sorry to have doubted you Minh...

Do you have any photos of the Naim kit - I've always wanted to see 35 Statement boxes together :-)

Thank you for the suggestions! The chord seems to have an IR remote control, so keeping it completely out of sight will not work well. I think I will clamp them. Pics to follow.
