iTunes, Mu-So, NAS questions
Posted by: lerxxst on 03 December 2015
Hi all, I'm looking for some advice.
I have a large collection of digital music - around 3TB stored on a Synology NAS.
I'm looking at buying a Mu-So to play said collection through.
The problem I have at the moment is that iTunes doesn't play nicely with the NAS - dropping the connection and defaulting back to the local drive, slow connectivity & choppy playback.
The question is what should I do? Replace the Synology? With what? Move most music to the iMac - not enough space (3TB), something else?
Any advice would be appreciated.
I use an 8TB WD Thunderbolt hard drive connected to my MacMini and play music via iTunes controlled on an iPad with the Remote app via Airplay to the Muso with excellent results. This assumes you have decent WiFi connection in your home.

If you have a NAS and a Muso, that's all you need. Put them both on your network and instal UPnP software on the NAS. No need for iTunes.
It sounds like your iTunes folder resides on your NAS? That can be tricky. When you launch iTunes, your NAS must always be available.
If not, you will always cause problems.
Besides, it sounds like your network isn't very robust. You have to address that too.
I use an ND5XS, a NAS and iTunes and they work marvellously together. They are all hard-wired into the network.

Thanks Steve, I had considered this option but my iMac goes to sleep & drops connectivity - I'll look into whether that would be different with a Thunderbolt connection.

Thanks ChrisSU, That sounds like a solution. I presume that track selection is done by the app?

Hi mcjt, yes you're correct my iTunes folder is supposed to be on the Synology NAS and as you say is tricky! The network is robust - its just the shear size of the library I think.
I have the same solution as Steve with a Thunderbolt drive and it works perfectly. I also used to stream to my Mac Mini via a Nas and had no problems with that approach although I didn't used ITunes which I detest. I really don't see what ITunes brings to the party to be honest

Yes, you'd find the NAS by selecting the UPnP input on the Muso app and control everything from there.

That can be sorted in Settings on your MacMini.

Hi dayjay, I need iTunes since I like to have music on the move & having an iPhone sort of requires iTunes - I agree its not good but I'm stuck with it unless you know a better solution?
