What's with the DAC-V1 firmware version number?

Posted by: thijazi on 05 December 2015

The new release of the firmware is 1.16 for the DAC-V1, the old firmware was 1.6.... With my logic (not an expert) I would have expected the firmware version to increment towards a larger number (i.e. from 1.6 to 1.8 or 2.0)... Not sure how Naim looks at this numbering format... Also curious whether or not the current 1.16 indicates more room for improvement beyond bug fixes.

Regardless, I am pretty happy with the fact that my investment in Naim is being maximized with the new releases. Well done Naim!

16 is a larger number than 6, guess it is more obvious if you think of the original being 1.06 and the latest is 1.16.

true, counter intuitive though.. Software usually follows a decimal path...

Sorry to have to say but it's you not understanding the decimal system. 1.16 is not the same as 1.1.6. Unfortunately you are not in a minority. Naim are spot on, 1.16 is an advance on 1.6 in every meaningful way. I do get annoyed with folk who think they are smarter when they are anything but.  Hopefully a learning point for many. Regards

Seems counter intuitive to me: 1.61 or 1.6.1 would be an an advance on 1.6. In terms of x.y.z

x denotes the major release

y denotes the minor release and

z is the revision of the minor release

Minh,

Common misconception. Certainly not counter intuitive. 16 is the y in your scenario. Your logic is predicated on a uni-digit system, not a decimal system.

(PS How did you get on with the Torus?)

Andy

I read computer science at university and I have written a lot of software. Maybe Naim are using their own convention instead of the standard convention for software updates.

From my experience, my C60's produce enough bass on their own to not need a Torus in my listening room

For example, if the last release was 1.6, then the subsequent releases should have been 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, 1.13, 1.14, 1.15 before reaching 1.16

Good to hear about the Torus, as your listening space is larger than mine. I can stop hankering after a demo.

Naim are using standard convention. The decimal system was adopted from libraries/book referencing systems, so your university appears to be at loggerheads with most of academia if you have not simply confused the fact that the numbered 'release' is ten versions ahead of the previous 'release' and not just one software revision ahead. Not all versions are public releases but a developer still needs to identify different versions. Regards

For those concerned about such things and if I'm allowed to quote from the original post to Beta testers:

"Current production grade Firmware for the DAC-V1 stands at v1.6. Beta code now bumps this to v1.12. Here are the steps to get you up and running!".

Then there was v.14 and v.15.

v1.16 is the current "public" release.

Merci beaucoup Dave, and so much more succinct. Kudos

To be fair, it's not really a release if it is not released in the public domain
