I am having a terrible time trying to get my Uniti set-up for streaming...

I have spent four increasingly frustrating days trying to get the Uniti set-up properly on my network without real success. At the moment, I can see the Uniti listed as a device on my laptop PC when I go to MS Vista's Network and Sharing Centre. And I can ping it and see the devices webpage. However, I cannot get it to stream files from my computer. When I try and set-up UPnP, the Uniti will freeze: the display says 'Please Wait' and 'Input Initialising', but it won't go beyond that point. I have reset it many times, tried various things, and think I have set windows sharing options correctly, but I'm not a computing expert, so I don't really know what to do now. My network is only a laptop, Nas, and Uniti, going into a Buffalo switching hub that is connected to the internet through an ONU - optical network unit. Internet Radio is not working, too. I have had some help from Naim's SH but in desperation I'm posting here. Any suggestions? Thanks very much!
I have had the same message from my Uniti on occasion when trying to access NAS. I don't find trying to reset through the Uniti menu options necessarily helps. So far though switching the power to the Uniti off briefly (a couple of minutes) has always sorted the issue. I should add that I try not to do this very often. You sound as if you have already tried this so this may be of limited help. Sorry I can't offer anything more insightful.
It's very difficult to diagnose network problems at a distance but if internet radio is not working then it's not a pc problem (at least not entirely!) as my Uniti plays internet radio when the pc is switched off. I would check that the router is seeing the Uniti (I assume an ONU is a kind of router). Sounds like a router/network set up issue to me.
Possibly to do with the ports on your router being closed. You need to access these from the router's website admin area.
It sounds like you have some fundamental network issues that everything's sat on top of - I guess since neither the UPnP nor iRadio "inputs" are working then the first question is, is your Uniti actually getting an IP address, subnet mask, DNS value and Gateway value from your network?
Cheers
Phil
Thank you for all the responses. I think it is a "router/network" issue, too. The Optical Network Unit (ONU) is a modem terminal and not a router, and works without a Gateway. I have been told by the ISP and Telephone Co. that there is no ONU admin function. Not sure if that's true, but basically it sits there to convert a Fiber Optic signal into an electrical Ethernet one. Anyway, today I have bought a router, and all being well, I can set this up to sit behind the ONU, and get everything working properly. At one point, however, I did manage to get the Uniti to stream (iRadio never worked) but I had to disable and change various settings in Windows and it made the network a little odd. Thanks very much!
How are you connecting to the Uniti?
I take it not wireless? Then ethernet?
Is that right?
I installed the new router behind the ONU and I can now stream from my PC and use iRadio. However, after a while my network will drop the connection to the Uniti and I usually have to reset it to get it back. It must be another "router/network" issue. Everything is connected by wired ethernet. Any suggestions, please? Thanks!
If you disconnect your router from your "ONU" so the router is set up standalone (without a connection to the internet) do you still have the same issue?
What router did you get?
Phil
Yes, I still have the same issue with the router - Buffalo BBR-4MG - disconnected from the ONU. Thanks!
Hmmm ... can't find any useful information on that router on the Internet I'm afraid so I'm a little stumped as to what to suggest - can you try a different router?
Phil
It's a Japanese router. I don't have another one at hand to try and I only bought this one a couple of days ago. I have just updated to the latest firmware. Maybe that will help, we'll see. Thanks!
I lost the connection again last night after I had updated the router's firmware. I can successfully ping the Uniti's IP. But my Uniti reports that there are no servers available and I don't see the Uniti as a device on the Vista network map. Thanks!
Is there an option on your router to filter UPnP (also sometimes known as a "gaming" option)?
It's a bit difficult to come up with sensible suggestions as to where to start as I can't find anything helpful out about your router...
Phil
Yes, I think there is an option to filter UPnP on the Buffalo. Thanks!
Switch port on a switch or router-switch such as your buffalo, should either snoop and process multicast ( expensive / pro devices ) or flood ( cheap consumer devices). If your buffalo device is doing neither, uPnP won't work ( unless you manually set it up ).
One idea to try is borrow a little netgear switch. Plug one UTP lead (Ethernet cable) between the switch and your buffalo, and connect your other UTP leads that connect to your NAS, PC and Naim equipment into the netgear instead of the Buffalo... This way you can be sure that the multicasts are flooding and can rule that out as an issue if still does not work.
I browsed your Buffalo device briefly, and so no mention of multicast on the 4MG model, but did see it mentioned on the 4HG model, but even then couldn't find the specifics.

Thank you for the reply, Simon. I gave the Uniti a static IP yesterday, and the streaming seems to be working a little better now but after a while I will still lose the connection. Present connection has been good for about 10 hours or so. I have noticed when I am logged out of the router, since the static IP was set, the Uniti as a device will disappear from my Vista network map (I can still stream). It reappears if I log back in. Thanks!

Things are a lot better but it's not working perfectly. I am intermittently losing the connection to the Foobar UPnP server. Seems to be a similar issue to this thread. But it doesn't say if the problem was resolved. I agree that the Vista network mapping (using Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper?) is a minor side issue. Thanks!
It's still not right: using Foobar UPnP I am losing the connection to the Uniti about once a day. I have to switch the Uniti off and back on to restore the connection. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks very much!
