UPNP server rec for a Mac - with on the fly transcoding
Posted by: DQ on 13 May 2011
All,
Helping a friend get his NDX to see ALAC off a Mac. Any recommendations on a UPNP bit of software to install on the Mac so that NDX can see it and that means he does not have to convert his ALAC to FLAC.
Cheers!
Please stay away from EyeConnect candy, it cripples NDX.
I like PS3 Media Server (http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/) on Linux, but the Mac port might be worth checking out, too.
Thanks, and PS3 can do transcoding too, right?
Loos like it would be worth a try
Majestic - available free or for a few pennies. My preferred flavour!

DQ,
Yes, it transcodes on the fly. Movies too, if you like.
Sorry to diagree, however on the Mac, EyeConnect is your only real option if you want ALAC transcoding.
Majestic will transcode, but only to low bit rate MP3.
EyeConnect will transcode your ALAC to WAV, preserving sound quality.
Hi Tog,
That would depend what Mac he/or she is using.
An issue I don't think has been addressed yet.
I may post a new thread here.
But it could be one of an assortment and could be running all sorts of other programmes as well at same time. It makes difference.
Interesting, did not know that majestic was bringing quality down to MP3 level. Is EyeConnect the only real option? What about Asset with crossover?

Hi John
Macbook Pro with 4mb - running EyeConnect - nothing else - same with similar spec IMac - like treacle ... horrible and no cover art.

You could try a combination of Squeezebox Server + XLD (X Lossless Decoder) and see if that works.
EyeConnect is slow to load up lists and doesn't present artwork, but streams just fine and is very stable.
You could try Asset in CrossOver, but its an unsightly and complex kludge if you ask me.
My approach - I run one or more of EyeConnect, Playback and Majestic at any given time.
EyeConnect for ALAC->WAV transcoding and stability.
Playback for FLACs and HiRes.
Majestic for artwork.
One day, somebody will write a Mac UPNP server that does all of these. I would pay plenty for this. Naim have no intention of porting their UnitiServe UPNP Server code to any other platform, which is a shame, but understandable.
