Just who was that 80's rock singer?

My wife is trying to figure out who an 80's singer that she can kind of remember and picture in her mind actually is. She describes him as having long, straight black hair and a distinctive voice. She recalls the music as being somewhere in the metal space. Most likely metal, but "dark" rather than pretty. I now this isn't a lot to go on, but we'll happily research any suggestions/candidates.

Ian stood in for Jim Morrison on the Doors tour a few years back - did a pretty good job.

Must dig out my Cult cd's and give them a listen - been a while.....

My cousin was bass guitarist in the cult in their hayday, Jamie stewart. Although I was into the goth scene I never really liked the cult that much, too flowery, too many yeah yeah yeah's and pointless guitar riffs, yawn.
