Artwork Disappearing

Posted by: NigelS on 10 December 2015

I've been using the Naim app on IOS with NDX and Unitilite for a couple of years now with artwork all displaying as expected. Music all served from Synology DS212 NAS. I upgraded software and started to use the Tidal service in the last 2 weeks. Last week or so I've started to notice my artwork selectively disappearing when streaming UPNP being replaced by blue box with note.

Artwork folder & metadata all still present on NAS. Problem seems to be more prevalent with albums I've added in last 6 months but happening with both Flac & Wave files. Very Odd.

Anyone experienced similar / found a fix?

I had something similar a few month ago.
Problem is I'm not sure what fixed it as I re-indexed the NAS (Synology DS214) & cleared both app cache's, whatever it was its not returned.

OK, did think about clearing cache but as issue is same on iPhone & iPad was assuming that shouldn't be the cause. What do you mean by re-indexing the NAS. How would I do that?

OK I agree on the cache diagnostic,  but no harm to do it periodically whatever
To reindex - open the Synology web page > Control Panel > Media Indexing > Re-Index button
It takes a few minutes, but leave it to complete

Also while you are in your Syn web page,   if you are using the Synology "Media Server",  check that the following is the same as ..........................
Media Server > Browser Settings >  Check (tick)  "Display Cover Image for Audio Files" box
& make sure the Filenames: entry is
"  cover.jpg;Cover.jpg;COVER.jpg;folder.jpg;Folder.jpg;FOLDER.jpg  "

OK, Great. Thanks. Will give this a try.

Re-indexing the NAS seems to have done the trick. Thanks again.

Great !!  happy it was the fix.  I had that problem a while ago,  my logic said it had to be a NAS/UPnP confusion issue & re-indexing fixed it for me.  Now I run a re-index if I'm digging around in the Synology web page,  e.g. when installing an update.

I have similar issues with my Synology DS212 running on DSM5.2 firmware in combination with my iPads/iPhones.

  1. Some album artwork on the Naim app is randomly replaced by a blue box, just like Nigel.
  2. A few albums stay as 'ghost album' on the app list after I have renamed them. So the re-named album appears, and contains the music, but the old album stays as empty 'ghost album', even after removing the UPnP cache and the Coverart cache.

Previously I experienced that even re-indexing the Synology did not help. Encouraged by Mike I will try it once again...

Reindexing my library on the Synology NAS took 1-2 hours. It solved problem 2 (removing 'ghost albums'), but still some album artwork is replaced by the default blue picture, even though I have added the artwork to the track via JRiver.

A word of warning for anyone who stores lots of photos and videos on their NAS. At the moment, I have quite a large collection of holiday photos and videos from the past 10 to 15 years on my Synology NAS. I will eventually get around to setting up a second NAS to accommodate them.

I re-indexed my music, photos and videos, and it took the better part of 8 or 9 hours, despite choosing to create thumbnails for the photos and videos in 'low' resolution.

I agree the word of warning with photos & videos,  re-indexing that stuff takes hours
When I got into music streaming I moved the photos & videos over to a separate SSD & use that as a copy/paste store for my PC,  & an SSD doesn't need re-indexing.
I have the music on a NAS & that is strictly only for music  -  & it re-indexes (maybe twice a year) in a few minutes

Yes - my aim will be to move my photos and videos, and keep my current Synology NAS as a dedicated music device.  I like to be able to stream my photos and home videos to my Smart TV though, so it will probably be a second Synology NAS for me rather than a standard hard drive or SSD.
