DSD via Unitiserve SSD
Posted by: MMcCulloch on 12 December 2015
Is it possible for the Unitiserve to send DSD (in DSF format) to the NDX/nDAC yet? I ask because I've upgraded my NDX & nDAC to play DSD, and have confirmed that they can. But the DSF files I loaded onto my network are not seen by the Unitiserve (that is, they do not show up on the UPNP for the NDX via the app). Is there a solution to this? Thanks.
No, the US can't stream DSD.
Is it still true after the latest upgrade of US dated on Dec 14th, 2015 ?

Not 2015, if it is 1.7B that was released in 2014, long before DSD or Tidal integration arrived for the streamers.

It is 1.7b. I mistook Dec 14 to be Dec 14th instead of Dec 2014.
In that case people using Naim Streamers and nDac with UnitiServe/HDX are not going to get DSD support.

I sure hope UnitiServe/HDX will get DSD + Spotify + Tidal +HLS AAC internet radio streams.
It seams to me that UnitiServe/HDX technology is being left behind at the moment. I hope this is just a short term thing.

Naim have said that the servers won't get Spotify, Tidal etc because these are streaming services, and the servers are servers not streamers.
But what about DSD support ? If I need to get a DSD file stored in US and accessed by NDX/ND5-Zs how do I do that ?

Pull it from your NAS, rather than have it pushed by a server.
or put it on a Memory Stick (not elegant - I know)
Pulling it all from NAS is surely an option. But that raises the question that why would one go for UnitiServe at all - only for bit perfect CD ripping ? At the same cost one can get ND5-XS which will do everything UnitiServe SSD does except CD ripping and running as a UPnP server.
I'm really confused by Naim's positioning of UnitiServer.

I don't really understand your last answer. What is confusing about a UnitiServe, beyond a fact that the CURRENT version does not yet serve DSD files?
NAIM streamers only got the DSD playback a month ago....
I still believe that one of the problems with the servers is that Naim needs outsiders to code the software. And to decide what to do about the old version of Windows xp on the servers. If the server software is more or less out of development I would hope that new buyers are told that very clear.
I can easily live without dsd support, but Tidal support would have been great.

I am thinking of adding a Userve - can I confirm from you that it's not possible to listen to Tidal through the Naim app with one, thanks?
Yes. Neither Tidal Support nor DSD support is yet there in UnitiServe.
My issue is I'm not able to know whether it is coming in future so that I can still make an investment now.

Given that Naim do not (usually) pre-announce the addition of features, I suggest that you plan on not knowing, and acting accordingly.
OK I will wait and see as well then. Thanks for the reply.

Naim streamers support Tidal and are controlled by the Naim app. The Unitiserve is controlled by a separate app called N-Serve, and doesn't support Tidal. If you already have a streamer or DAC to use with a Unitiserve, does that have Tidal support?
no - I currently take the output from my PC sound card into my Dac and I was hoping therefore to do a one stop with the Userve. I can look at the Streaming options instead. Thanks for the reply.

UnitiServe is a UPnP server / cd reaper, not a streamer per se.
Currently DSD playback is. Ot there, but than again the current software version is 1.7d. It does have a digital output for a connection to an external device with a dac or dac itself. That way music can be played back directly from the UnitiServe.
As to Tidal - that is available via NAIM streamers.

Sound quality of US should be superior to that fom your Mac.
perhaps you could use Tidal on your Mac and stream from there into a dac, leaving US to do what it does best: reaping, cataloguing and serving great sounding music.
So any speculation yet for a possible update or even upgrade of the US's - Firmware or even hardware to take most recent features of the Melco's and others onboard?
Chag -
