New cartridge from Linn
Posted by: FangfossFlyer on 12 December 2015
I am reading elsewhere about a new cartridge from Linn to replace the Klyde.
The Kristal?
Richard
Apparently it is officially launched tomorrow - and about time too (not being a Klyde fan).
I am still saving up for a Kandid - so could be worth a listen.
Apparently a certain man from Leicester is very impressed.
Did Roger like it then?
Just back from a system installation in Barcelona this evening and tomorrow will be most interesting I believe.... I'll say no more other than enjoy!

If it looks as good as it sounds and has a reasonable price I think that Linn has a winner:

That does look smarter than a Klyde. I'll be sticking with the Kandid though.

Absolutely so on both counts. I can say no more as "Rules apply". Anyone in the XX2/2 or Delos market, best thing to do is try and get a listen.

P.S Can't wait to get one in an Aro!

Yes the Akito has changed allot since then for sure and personally; I think it should have been re-named when manufacture at Linn in Scotland replaced sourcing it from Japan, as it is sooooo much better built and sounding than then.

Looks a bit like Benz Micro. ( hope it sounds better than that! )
Peter,
What's its output voltage at 5 cm?
It surely nice to have a flavour alternative to Dyna or Lyra. Any resemblance in sound from the Klyde? ( I assume it replaced the Klyde )

I assume you mean 'if it sounds as good as it looks', because it looks really good to me. I'm glad it retains the three-point mounting.
I think it might look rather good in my Aro!
Yeah, I meant if it sounds as good as it looks! ![]()
If it sounds good it is good
At that price point, that's really attractive to Klyde owners like me who can't afford a Kandid. I'm definitely interested, especially if it represents a decent SQ upgrade on the Klyde. I've heard that Linn are doing a decent trade-in and some promo offers in the New Year... ![]()
Kevin,
Do you prefer Kandid over your Kleos?
I wonder what the US pricing is.

Historically, Naim gear seems to retail at around double the sterling price, in dollars. So I'd expect to see U.S. retail prices for the Krystal somewhere in the low to mid $2,000s.

Really looking forward to hearing about how the new Krystal will sound in a naimed LP12 into a superline with K type z foils.
Why ?
Well some people in the know seem to think that the Kandid's high output overloads the superline. Some have purchased the Superline "E" because of this.
The Krystal will have a low output like the Klyde so will probably suit the superline very well.
Also, this new cart has no flying leads which never did the aro any favours. No longer will we need that messy bunch of wires behind the cartridge with the extra connections that the male to male pins bring.
Three point mounting holes to perfectly match the Aro's geometry.
Nude body without plastic cover.
7075 alloy body with three lands instead of a flat top for better connection to aro headshell.
This cart may be better than an Akiva in an Aro for a lot less money. Lets see.
Mario.

Ha! given my comments on Benz in the blue place recently, you can rest assured on that Kuma ![]()
Nice to have more choice - absolutely!
Klyde is still listed, but I expect it to fade away as stocks get used up.
The output was stated by the designer yesterday on a thread in the blue place again as (Sensitivity = 0.25mV +/- 1 dB @ 1kHz)

As a recent purchaser of a new klyde what are the rumours or news of trade-ins?

I would use your Klyde for a good while, but once you wish to change it for a Krystal, the trade in value will be £125 in the UK and similare elsewhere in the world. Best to ask your supplying retailer for what he can do for you.
Hope this helps

Thanks Peter. I posted more fully on the Linn forum. Spent a happy couple of hours revisiting old lps yesterday evening. I spent some money refurbing my 25yr old lp12 a month ago. Such an enjoyable thing to fall in love with it all over again. However tonight it has died. It has a new motor but I wonder if the valhalla PS which I haven't yet upgraded has died. Anyhow it is going back to the dealer and maybe it will have a lingo PS quicker than I intended
(Sorry a bit off-topic for naim forum; other kit is superuniti which I also love)

I'll put money on the fact the R1 resistor on the Valhalla has cracked in half/failed. This then takes out the bridge rectifier and fuse. If so, it is repairable and Darran @ ClassA in Sheffield offers a reasonably quick turnaround time for repairs. Alternatively, some dealers have exchange re-built Valhallas available. However, if you decide to go for a Lingo, remember that even broken, the Valhalla has some value!
Kind regards,
Peter
Thanks. Took it in today. My dealer thinks the valhalla is bust. I will get a lingo now as it was my intention anyway. Good advice re the valhalla though, I have an even older lp12 (my first one) without valhalla which when I have time I will rebuild. So I will keep the valhalla and get it repaired.
Thanks for the advice
Andrew

It looks great in an Aro and for the money a great partner for the Aro too - A silver Troika maybe!!!
