Naim app control on Lock screen
Posted by: MartinKocurek on 14 December 2015
I have one Xmas wish - to be able to control Naim app on locked iPad screen.
thank you :-)
It would save a lot of hassle, but it won't happen cos Apple won't allow it.
Why Apple allows to some application and for some not?
It's certainly possible on Android, but the Naim app doesn't do it. One of the earliest things raised as a wish list item after the app was released, but no sign of it so far.

Although I'm not sure of the Apple rules, I notice that the apps with lock screen access are "local functions", whereas the naim app is a control point for "remote functions". The volume and track controls for, say Music or iBooks or Spotify or Tidal are for items playing on (or, with AirPlay, coming "through") the iPad and so there is some conceptual link that the screen controls and the hardware controls would work on the (sole) app that is playing. But the naim app is (just) a control point for actions taking place elsewhere (ie on our naim streamers and network servers) and, as just one design and implementation roadblock, could be running simultaneously with any (one) of the locally playing apps...so how would precedence, etc., get decided?
I doubt this will appear unless (until?) iOS has more complete multitasking...and that's an issue that is way bigger than just st the lock screen or the naim app!

I see :-( I am not going to switch to Android

Certainly don't for controlling Naim gear, the Android app is some way behind the iOS version.
Why is this so? Aren't there a lot of Android users around as well and wouldn't it be nice not to treat them as second class customers. Waiting for the additional album informations on the Android app for a long time now. Maybe someone from Naim could comment on this.
I think complexity is higher writing an Android apps compared to Apple which is a close system and more predictable. Android apps run on so many different hardware and screen sizes. Anyway I am using the android naim app and do look forward to more features and improvement on it.

What is the Android app missing?

It lacks the access to the Rovi Music database to obtain more information on artists, tracks and albums. Can't comment on other differences since I use Android only.

Stability for one thing. The Naim app on my Google Nexus 10 & 7 both crash frequently but the iPad version is rock solid.
A shame as I prefer android to iOS where possible.
I have the exact same wish for the Android app!
It would offer the additional benefit of running in the background, which I think would also solve one of the biggest gripe I have about this app: the time it takes to connect to my Mu-So!
The Synology app “DS audio” does it. So does “AIMP remote control” and probably countless others. Once they are connected to the music player or server, subsequent accesses via the lock screen or the notifications area are next to instantaneous, as they should be!
The AIMP app, which used to be free (and now costs a mighty 1€39) offers other nice features such as volume control via the phone’s dedicated volume buttons, automatic lowering of the volume when receiving or making a phone call. These would constitute the second part of my wish list. One can always dream...
I don't know about this apple not allowing it reason. iPeng has lock screen functionality and it does more or less what the Naim app does.

This, principally. I get crashes continually on my G3 and Nexus 10, while on borrowed iOS devices the app runs fine. It's basically standard that the app will crash, I'll restart it, and *then* do whatever it was I was trying to do.
The extra bells and whistles like Rovi would be nice (it's quite a big extra IME), but actually working consistently would be the best update. I've sent umpteen crash reports, reported it to Naim support, and along with others have mentioned it on the forum. But so far the stability issues remain.
Anyway, that's slightly off topic. If I recall correctly I've seen posts here from people with app authoring experience. Any reason why we haven't got lock screen controls etc? Seems to me it probably has to do with the fact that the app loses connection with the streamer while not in active use. Other similar apps don't seem to do so. Curious as to why.

That was Naim's response on a recent thread on the same subject. Maybe there's more to it than that, I don't know. I've never used iPeng.
I have several apps that control hardware that have "Today" screen widgets. WIth Logitech Harmony and Philips Hue apps, i can just swipe down on the lock screen and control my lights and hifi. Apple allows it, and it would be cool for Naim to implement it too!
