Cleaners and cable dressing. Arrrgh!

Posted by: Steve J on 17 December 2015

Our usual weekly cleaner has gone home for Christmas and we had a replacement visit today. Lovely girl who seemed to have done an excellent job according to my wife, until I came into my listening room.....

I wanted to hear a new CD I'd ripped last night but when I turned it on my ears nearly exploded! The volume control was at the 3 o'clock position. When I eventually retrieved the remote and turned it down to a more civilised position I thought the mastering of the CD couldn't be very good as it didn't sound good at all. I then noticed that all my speaker cable and power cable supports were all over the place and the cables moved so the speaker cables were crossing and resting on the Powerlines.

After a little game of Twister to re-site the cables and supports the sound is now back to it's sublime best and I now know this remaster of Jeff Beck's Truth is actually very good indeed.

Cleaners ..... Bless 'em.

My wife and I do all our gardening though.

My wife and I share the house cleaning, I do my listening room and she does the rest.

and your wonderful garden Roger?

Thank you for your kind remark Steve. The work on the garden is shared a little more equally.

Off topic perhaps (at least it's nothing to do with hi-if) but I once came home early from work to find the cleaner doing her stuff - wearing my slippers, which I thought was rather strange. On a previous occasion when I was in she had asked me to lift a large toy rubber spider off the floor as she was completely arachnophobic (even though it was obviously fake). On the next cleaning day I intentionally left the rubber spider inside one of my slippers at the bottom of my bed. Unfortunately this gentle jousting proved too much for her and she never cleaned for us again.

100% priceless.

Reminds of when I bought my CDS many years ago now ...

SWMBO kept putting a dried flower arrangement on top of it, in spite of my telling her that bits dropped off into the mechanism.  I decided it was a waste of time telling her that it might degrade the sound by just being there.

Only obsessive pedants really get into this hobby beyond a certain point.

And only those with a sense of humor that don't take themselves too seriously stick it out.

Or those who stay single.

My eyes lit up when I saw this post.  I had thought it was going to be about a mains cleaner not the main cleaner.  I was looking forward to learning about how important or useless things like an Isotek Sigmas might be rather than the lady with the duster.

I shall need to dig deeper into the deep waters of the forum.  I had to take the spikes off my speakers because our wonderful lady found them a bit hard to slide about the carpet.  Instead of eight little holes, we now have sixteen small tears. (Tears not tears - they came afterwards).

We've always done our own cleaning and gardening, but the older we get, the more attractive the idea of getting some help becomes.

Two winters ago was our first using a snow removal service, and it has been wonderful! $70/hour (for a crew of 2) can add up over a full season, but it is really nice not having to worry about frost bite or slipping on the ice.  The crew comes out quickly after the snow ends, and often in the wee hours.  On many occasions I have simply woken up to magically cleared walkways and driveway. Highly recommended to northerners of a certain age!

The garden will likely be next...

Yes Hook, gardening is not great for those of us with suspect backs. I persevere though as I find gardening therapeutic and the results pleasing.

Looks beautiful, Steve. What a lovely place to relax on a summer's day.
