DSD with DoP via SPDIF

Posted by: Eloise on 18 December 2015

Just a question more for my reference than anything...

With the Naim streamers upgraded to support DSD: I assume they support this via DoP format.  Can the accept this via SPDIF inputs or only from UPnP server (such as Minimserver)?

Also, am I correct that all the standalone streamers can be upgraded to support DoP as well as the SuperUniti and the NAC-N 272?

Hope that made sense!

Hi, I am not sure the streamer support DoP via UPnP, I thinks it's DSF/DFF.., but they do output SPDIF carrying DoP. Good question on SPDIF input supporting DoP.. I don't know and have no way of checking.

Eloise,

the standalone streamers can play native dsf and dff DSD64 without the need for a PCM wrapper/container. I have, however, managed to stream DoPFLAC and DoP Wav files using Asset Upnp server installed on my QNAP NAS which I reported on another thread. Unfortunately, though this method has introduced a loud clicking noise at the start of each new track.

l stream using UpnP server so can't comment on your other queries re SPDIF.

Playing DSD (.dsf) straight from NAS to NDX gives a soft click on most,  but not all,  track changes.  However unlike the way it was when we first tested DSD when the click was a loud pop, its now a soft & hardly noticeable click
Its being worked on by Naim in the beta testing;  it occurs if the DSD stream is unable to be resolved in exactly 16 bit samples. If the data samples end in less than 16 bits & there are bits on the end that are filled with 0's,  then you will hear the click.    As said at the beginning Naim have done a lot to quieten it down but it might not be possible to solve completely with the current hardware.

Thanks for the info, Mike. The sound I hear on the DoP FLAC files is definitely the loud pop you described. It's possible that this the conversion from dsf to DoP FLAC    using dBpoweramp has introduced this issue since Motoman didn't have the same issue when he used DSD2FLAC to do the conversion.

Fortunately, I am able to use Minimserver to stream dsf files natively and hopefully we'll see the NAS based versions of Asset supporting native DSD in the not too distant future.
