Expensive Christmas...
Posted by: Bert Schurink on 19 December 2015
I now brought a Naim Fraim, after I bought the Melco earlier this month. So a very expensive Christmas. But honestly I also can't wait until everything comes together and I will have reached the end of the journey. And of course I still could contemplate about a second 555PS and dream about the NAP500 DR upgrade. But for now I feel I have reached the right level.
I will update all of you on the experiences when the Fraim is installed.
Looking really something special now Bert.
I bet it's going to be sounding something special too! Expensive Christmas, but a nice way to round out the festive period with the Fraim install.
Enjoy!
After a couple of hours the impression is that the system is transformed into a next level, which I thought wouldn't be possible. Still interested if more happens after further warm up.
Excellent photos, Bert. I enjoyed reading your write-up. Hope the Fraim impresses.

Will talk a bit more about musical differences I hear tomorrow. But this morning just the impression, how is it possible that a rack can make such a difference in sound. It really amazes me, and I am very happy that I have it.
Within my limited understanding, the key is that a quality rack reduces negative effects of the music being played in the room on the gear. The impacts of the sound energy are dissipated by the rack minimizing transmission to the gear. Microphonic effects and interference are lowered. The result is a cleaner, more accurate sound.

This is looking very nice, I'm pleased you chose the best sounding combination of finishes as well!
I moved to Fraim in 2014, I previously had a Stands Unique rack with much surplus equipment. The cost of the Fraim demanded some disposals of items not earning their keep and as the Fraim was used I ended up £50 in profit from the change!
My system is far more modest than yours and I was staggered at the difference. Like you I don't see how it can make such a difference but it does. I did a dedicated radial supply just afterwards and this didn't make anywhere near the improvement the Fraim made.
It does seem expensive for what it is, but in sound quality terms it easily justifies the asking price.

Hi Bert,
Beautiful Fraim! What finish is it? If I recall there are two cherry variations. Is this non-tinted cherry?

Sorry can't help you here. It's cherry, but I didn't realize they had two types of cherry wood. It's stylish and also fits well to the finish of my speakers.
We've had a Fraim since it came out, ours is over 12 years old and it still looks new. Sounds amazing too, and never been tempted to change. In our second system we have a Phase 5 Mana, which is excellent also but not as even handed as Fraim, but still very good. We still have a Projekt stand (used by Naim many moons ago) and it is good. Never quite got on with the other stands (we had Hutter for a while, as well as a bespoke job)
So I promised to get back to you all with the impressions after having everything in place. While writing this I was thinking about a post from somebody before who referred to the introduction of the Fraim in his life as "it has been emotional", and that reflect very much my impression as well.
What has improved about the overall system due to the introduction. Of the Farim is the following:
- the decay of notes is like it needs to be, before the decay was sometimes too long especially with deep bass - leading to less prat and accuracy
- the soundstage has increased further, more three dimensional sound
- detail has increased
- tonality has become further natural
- bass is deeper when needed, also by the way for my AV setup
So overall impact is that the emotional impact of the music has further increased and one is only listening and I almost don't want to go to sleep anymore.
I also understand now that's an essential upgrade to get the maximum out of those black boxes.
Now I am just going to change the music server on the Melco to also get Wav directly to my NDS, and then I am set until new money has grown on a tree for the NAP500 move to DR......, given the price that might take an additional year or two....
