Star Wars - The Force Awakens

Posted by: JamieWednesday on 20 December 2015

In one word.

Epic!

Been to see it today. Completely faithful to the originals with many nods in their direction throughout. If you liked them, you'll love this.

It's like the last three were just a bad dream.

An encouraging verdit, Jamie. I've got tickets to see it on the 27th. Youngest daughter, a Stars Wars geek, is very excited! I'm hoping to be wowed.

I'm excited and I've seen it already!

Can't tell you how happy I am

Epic indeed.  One of the very very few films I've seen in cinema where there was pretty loud and prolonged applause as the credits came up at the end. Must see it again.....

I saw it yesterday - it was ok - i give it 7 out of 10.. no applause in my small local cinema.. I don't want to give a spoiler but some of the characters just didn't seem to work very convincingly - and I found it a bit dull in places - great effects though and spaceship fight scenes - and some good one-liner humour - and certainly true to the original...

Whole family going to see it tomorrow. Really excited!

It's a massively enjoyable film and we all enjoyed it hugely. The two new main characters - Rey and Finn - are excellent and the knowing references to the sexism of the past are most amusing - 'I can run without you holding my hand!'  All very well done.

It's no 45 years, the best film we've seen this year, but it's as good in a different way.

But then nothing's going to quite measure up to Stingray for you now, Simon, is it?

 or Thunderbirds... now you're talking...

BTW back to Star Wars  I thought Daisy Ridley played Rey very well.. the best performance in the film..

Whoops. Getting my vintage series mixed up.

I'd say it's pretty much on a par with Return of the Jedi, and about a million times better than the horrendous prequel trilogy. The bit where Han arrives in the Falcon and says 'Chewie, we're home!' (this is not a spoiler - it's in the trailer, ok) is ace! 8 out of 10, maybe 8.5...

I will have a look over th Christmas break. Not a big fan, but it's one of those ones I think I should see.

I'm taking my daughter to see this on the 23rd.  She has been a big Star Wars fan since she first watched the original trilogy on my old DVD5/AV2 with projector and 120" screen setup.  Somewhat unnervingly, she was a big fan of Darth Vader and various Vader costumes and light sabres have been collected and worn by her over the years.  I think she's outgrown the costumes, but I'll know for sure come Wednesday.  We're seeing it in 3D - I hope this doesn't turn out to be a mistake....

We thought it was terrific. A return to the original in many different ways. Actually funny touches of humour, and the best acting and dialogue, frankly, of all of the films (Peter Cushing, perhaps, excepted). The first strong female character and personable villain.

I don't like 3d much (especially for a long film, which this is) but it is definitely worth seeing in a cinema.

Aargh! Personally I can't take 3D.

But each to their own, she may love it

As to rating the film, I think it's right up there. There's the excitement of the original, both in plot terms and my own enthusiasm, added to the technical/production superiority of Empire. IMO it's way better than Jedi.

It's an example of how to use technology in sympathy with older films. The sound and light effects for blasters for example is updated and really well done while still in sympathy for the originals, yet the sounds made inside and by the Millenium Falcon are as the original. I feel they've done a spot on job.

I think I understand where Simon is coming from, one key actor didn't work for me but you can never achieve perfection.

Anyway, we're going again!

I think everyone has shown admirable restraint. Certainly nothing mentioned whatsoever that is not wholly covered in the trailers. Unless people having enjoyed it constitutes a spoiler for you, in which case Kevin may have a point.

Mind you I was quite surprised that they left the Rolf Harris cameo in. Especially a musical number in drag and with a wobble-board.

I liked the Jeremy 'Snoke' Corbyn cameo as the newly elected Supreme Leader of The First Order, with his inspiring speech to the party faithful, pledging to crush all resistance and bring order to The Galaxy once more, through use of his 'Superweapon' only to be shouted down by a bloke in a funny mask exclaiming "That's not a Superweapon, THIS is a Superweapon", whipping out what could have been a lightsaber from beneath his robes before shouting "It's the postal votes wot done it" and "I'm sorry Dad!"

Spoiler Alert!:

There was some excellent casting though...

Blatter the Hutt.

Saved on make-up. And acting.

Sssssshhhh!

Posted on: 22 December 2015 by Nigel 66

Went with the kids last night. Definitely much better than the 'prequel' trilogy, and truer to the original films.

3D effects at the cinema were really good and quite low key in comparison to a lot of 3D films. The special effects were very good and the space battles were excellent. Hopefully the follow up films will be equally as good!

Only a year and a half until the next proper episode. Filming of the key scenes in Ireland were completed in September.

Posted on: 22 December 2015 by rodwsmith

You do appear to be getting into spoiler territory there Bananahead...

I was gratified to discover that Ewan McGregor AND Alec Guinness are 'in' the film!

Can't say I noticed though, but it might encourage me to go and see it again (which cynically one imagines may perhaps have been the idea...).

I haven't seen any of the Star Wars films. I have seen a few excerpts, usually at hifi shows demonstrating surround sound and (high quality ?) projectors.

Would it be sensible to watch all the episodes since the start before going to see this latest offering ? Or would it be just as enjoyable on a stand-alone basis ?
