Loudspeaker for my first Naim unitilite

Posted by: Anto68 on 23 December 2015

Hi, i'm from Milan - Italy.

finally i just buy my first naim streamer player, the unitilite ( i sell my Linn Classic after 10 years...sik ) and i'm feeling so happy and satisfied. So, my question now regard the loudspeaker. At moment i still use my legendary Linn Kan and i would like upgrade it and get a valid bookshelf like the PMC Twenty 21. What you think about it ? Any other  better option for my unitilite?

sorry for my english and happy Christmas

Tony

The twenty.21 is a great speaker that I think would work really well with your unitilite. As to whether they are better than the Kans I have my doubts. I'd keep them if I were you.

You are right to move on the Kans. Great speakers but very demanding of amplification - the Unitilite will struggle to get the best out of the Kans. I speak from experience!

I once heard the Unitilite with a pair of Guru Juniors at a show and I kid you not is was one of the (if not THE) best sounds at that show. Truly amazing for such a modest system.

I know historically there has been a shortage of Guru speakers, especially the Juniors but if you can find a pair even secondhand I would thouroughly recommend them.

I am sure the PMCs would also be a good match - but I have not heard them.

Good luck on your Naim journey. It will be a journey as, you will find, it is very addictive - in a good way!

I am running a Naim UnitiServe into Naim Uniti and out through Monitor Audio Gold GX50s. Well worth a auditioning MAs if you get the chance.

I had a  Unitilite with B&W 684S2 for a while and they worked really well . I know B&W are not very fashionable around these parts, but If you have room for slim floor-standers they could be worth a listen.  I listened to the 685 S2 stand mounts also but the 684S2 had more of everything.

I'm assuming NigelB was at the Bristol show maybe 3 years ago where the Unitilite was demonstrated with Guru juniors. I'd agree the sound was stunning, definitely the most musical and involving at the show. The year before that a UnitiQute with the bigger Gurus (10s I think) sounded equally great so they could be an option.

Thanks everybody for the quick reply.

HUNGRYHALIBUT....Really should i keep my Linn kans? I thought it was more easy to replace it today after more than 10 years.

I am a bit disappointed regard my subwoofer Rel Quake that was connected to Linn Classik through neutrik cable in high level (to the loudspeaker output): now with the Unitilite I had to buy a new Naim cable Rca/4 din in low level to the Uniti pre/out output but seem it's lacking extension and depth bass than before with Linn connection. However I do not regret my old Linn....my new Naim is really amazing

The thing with the Kans - which is what others are referring to - is that they really thrive with a 250 to drive them. The 21 on the other hand is a more forgiving speaker. But they are not objectively better.

You can connect the subwoofer from the back of the Kans, but don't connect them to the terminals at the back of the Lite.

Hi Tony,

A ten year old "Linn Classic" and a pair of "legendary Linn Kans". Did they come together? The Kans that were sold in a package with the Classic had a port in the rear top corner IIRC.

Have yours got a port?

Chris

Thanks Chris! I may be confusing things - if people say 'Kans' I think of the proper MK 1 versions that I had for years. They are brilliant. But if they are MK 2 or later, with biwire terminals or (gasp) bass ports, get shot and get twenty.21s.

Likewise Nigel, especially if prefaced by legendary. Then I remembered the package that Linn were pushing at the time. So I thought it best that we establish exactly what we're playing with before we all start making wild speaker recommendations.

Hi Christopher, yes my Linn Classic and Kan did come together and I can confirm there is a port on low (not top) rear corner. It is not MK1 but for me it's legendary too.

Posted on: 24 December 2015 by hungryhalibut

That makes a difference. I'd take the 21 over the ported Kans any day.

Hi Tony, Next you'll be wanting me to correctly identify which of the bottom rear corners the ports are in   ;-)      I tried a pair of your Kans here and liked them. I'd hang on to them for a while and find out what your new Naim box can do. Who knows, you may be entirely happy with them. I'd get some Naca5 speaker wires though. Naim don't stipulate it but their designers will have used it when they designed your Unitilite.

Best, Chris

Hi Christopher, maybe is better I show you my Linn Kan that i just find in another topic in this forum..click in the link below and you'll see

https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...ly=41269443496626571

if you scroll the page down you'll see the rear pannel too. I'm happy with them since 2003 but now i would like upgrade my sound system. I sold my Linn Classik evaluated 800 euro (587 pounds) to the same seller where I purchased the Unitilite and now i'm looking for a new pair of speakers that have a clear and detailed music reproduction even at low volumes as Linn Kan made.

Cheers

Used n-Sats, maybe on n-brackets. Not 'new' though.

I'm running a pair of twenty 21's with nait xs and they sound very good together, but they really do need a wall close behind to help reinforce the lower end,it makes such a difference with these baby monitors.I also have to say that the sonolex tweeter really is a class act.

I'm using Focal Aria 906's with matching stands, I believe they were developed on the end of Naim equipment, with my Unitilite and I'm very pleased with them. Coming from a Naim/Proac pre power combination, this has that bit of "magic" that certain Naim systems can give.

Thank's for your feedback: can you tell me about their performance at low level ? I listen to much music late at night and my Linn Kans are great at very low level. I read the review about PMC 21 on "What HI FI?" and i was sorry to read "Don’t sound half as impressive when played at very low levels"

After 1 week with my Unitilte I'm very impressed by the high performance, i wonder if there's big difference between Unitilite and UNITI 2....

I can recommend Monitor Audio Gold series - easy to drive and pleasing speakers.

Well I also read the review from whf and thought about their issue about the low level playing ability of the pmc twenty 21's,I listen at low level often also, but it seems fine to me,I mean what can you expect at low level?but they do flourish with a wall at the back of them.At first I had them sited in front of a window on 60cm stands, they sounded good but they were lean sounding and I was a bit disappointed at first but got used to the fast energetic sound of them and then the Mrs fancied a room change around with a bit of encouragement from myself.lol. and we ended up siting them either side of my TV with a flat wall behind and the change in performance was dramatic to say the least it was as if I had just been given a new set of speakers much to my delight.I do love my wee pmc's now and am in no hurry to change them.

First of all I would like to wish everyone a happy new year.

After more than a week of tests for different Hi Fi - Hi End retailers in Milan and neighborhood and after testing several brands from Pmc to Herbet ( i love the english style) up to test the italian Sonus Faber which unfortunately remain Italian only at very high levels (Venere models are assembled in China with all due respect for the Chinese people) my choice was for a Loudspeaker made in Germany.

From today my Naim Unitilite is driven by a couple of ELAC BS 263. High standard performances but also very stylish and elegant in their black Piano cabinet.

Ciao a tutti

Hi Adam,

i spent all this afternoon in a great shop in Lecco (near Como lake) . I heard also highers models (on the paper) like Elac BS 244.3 and BS 312 . I finally chose the BS 263 for their warm sound ..in italia we say "vellutato" (velvety i don't know if in english is correct) highly controlled, large and dynamic sound impact, the deeper and extended bass for their small size. Amazing with classical music, the piano is played with an impressive naturalness. Same impressions for jazz music and vocals.

Unboxing the speakers i I even found 2 white gloves to avoid damaging the cabinet

Cheers
