Crackling from no Naim source

Posted by: joccko68 on 24 December 2015

Dear members, if anyone has experience with similar situation please let me know. This is not related to my core system but this is big forum so someone maybe has solution. I have nait-5i-2, cd5x and neat motive 2 as core in system.

Sometimes I use Marantz UD5007 with Kanexpro de-embeder to play dvda and sacd (hires output only allowed via hdmi). My dac is Schiit gungnir. I suppose that triangle Marantz-Kanex-Schiit is problem. Crackling is present even when Marantz is paused /no music and periods between cracks are 30-40 seconds.

I try to change cables( coax, rca, main...) without success im afraid its beyond that...but wher to looking for i dont know.

Thank to everyone who respond.

I guess the problem does not appear when the NAIM system is on its own (ie other components are disconnected). Correct?

From your description it sounds like a ground loop problem. I suspect your Marantz and / or other components do not have the 3rd ground pin. However.... Even if they did, with such a set up you will most likely experience a ground loop problem and RFI interference.

Can you try connecting your source via an optical cable to the DAC? This will remove the galvanic connection from the most likely offender to the rest of the system. If you don't have one, just borrow it from your dealer - if it cures the system, just keep the cable.

Hi Adam, everything that you say is correct. I replaced coax with optical and it was the same after short time. I just start playback and press pause and listened silence - crackling appears. After I try to exclude each source and I found out that Kanexpro is problem. I connected marantz ( is without grounding)  via rca  to naim amp it plays without problem.

But in mentioned scenario I loose source that I have used for my hires collection that is not original - you guess what I want to stress. Thats why I use Kanex to just keep 24/88(sacd onboard converted) and 24/192 for DVDA. Marantz had hdmi and analog output just.

Grounding....maybe, charger for Kanex maybe and data transfer also, but if kanex just keep pcm that i am sending via coax to dac I am not sure that that could be bottleneck.

Iwill try to order another de embedder via internet and try, otherwise Marantz doesn't has a sense - I have excellent cd player Naim

I forget to mention that with arcam rdac i didnt have this problem but also I should consider that kanex is chinese product so in meantime maybe problem with charger or electronic arised. Who knows.

Whatever thank you on respond and good willing Adam.

I had about the same issue using a Marantz UD7007 coaxial output to NAC-N272 digital RCA input. Using the BNC input with the adapter solved the crackling problem. I don't know how you connected all of course.

On another note...are you saying that you can 'transfer' DSD signals with the Kanexpro de-embeder (Through HDMI) to your dac? I wonder if that would be possible with my UD7007 to NAC-N272 digital input (optical)? Somewhere it will be transformed to PCM? On the Kanexpro de-embeder it doesn't say it can handle DSD.

rikkieb

marantz (hdmi) kanex (coax or optical) schiit gungnir ( rca) naim

no dsd direct, just PCM 24/88 ( info from forums....) onboard converted by marantz from sacd and 24/depend from dvda. Your Marantz in audio section and processing is better than mine.

The things that will make me crazy is listened Marantz  with kanex (without dac)with headphones it was OK. After I try TV music channels and receiver from TV with DAC and listened radio from it OK again.

only kanex and dac together give crackling -really frustrating.I will try Bnc adapter...For grounding I'm not sure what to think. Maybe my combination of equipment  is wrong somehow....
