Help Uniti powering up issue
Posted by: Dady on 27 December 2015
This is my first post, so please be gentle! Since Christmas Eve Eve my 3year old Uniti has been behaving oddly on power up. Now, I'm in the process of contacting the dealer/Naim support for long term solution, but holiday season is getting in the way! So in the mean time if anyone can advise me I'd be grateful. When I power up, both the Naim lamp and the oled display illuminate as usual, but the oled "goes off" after 15/20 seconds and power is interrupted. Power resumes again, then goes down again and this continues until I switch off. If I wait a few minutes and try again it seems to work correctly. Over the Christmas period I have resorted to leaving it permanently switched on just in case it doesn't come back to life at all and leaving me without any music!! Can anyone advise, am I doing the right thing leaving it on and can anyone shed any light on what might be the root cause?
Hi Dady,
The recommendation from Naim is normally to leave all equipment powered up all the time, this won't harm the Uniti, and will keep it nice and warm ready for action.
There has been a lot of threads over the years discussing the pros and cons of this, bu Naim do recommend it.
But the behaviour you describe doesn't seem quite right - you are doing the right thing and getting it checked out with your dealer.
HoPE this helps.

How do you know 'power' is interrupted?
As Chris says, leave powered up for the time being.
It's normal for the display to go off, depending on the delay that has been set. If it keeps playing it's fine. Just leave it on all the time. On the other hand, if the music stops when the display goes off, it needs fixing.
I know the power is interrupted because the sound goes off! Sorry, if I didn't make that clear. No settings have been changed. I've been using the Uniti since September 2012 and not experienced any problems until 23rd December. The only physical input connection is my TV using he AV Anologue 2 phono. I also have a REL sub connected directly to the speaker input terminals.
Sounds like it needs some TLC in that case.
Great for your speakers, that sudden on and off, I would leave it off and send it back to Naim, I would also make sure there is no damage to the drivers.
Dady,
Most likely cause is the Uniti not being compatible with your Rel sub when connected using the high level input to the speaker outputs. As per Rel manual when incompatibilities arise connect to the pre-amp. On the Uniti that means connecting via the dedicated sub ouputs. Naim power amps of any flavour do not like unusual loads attached to the speaker connections and your Uniti is triggering a protective cut out. If you have suitable phono leads use them, or just disconnect the rel for now. Can't explain why this is only now happening but I'll wager that this is the cause of the problem.

Yes the sound going off is not the same as the power going off, or display going off, try AndyPat's suggestion, let us know what happens.
Andy,
thanks for your suggestion re the REL. I'll disconnect it and see what happens. Does seem strange though if this is found to be the cause, as it has been working fine since installation back in June. I will feed back.

Ciao Dady, I'm sorry about the problem with your Uniti.
I'm from Milan - Italy and I'm a very satisfied new buyer of Uniti product. I also have a Sub Rel and was looking for information regarding the connection in Hi Level. My doubt was precisely to have problems to connecting Neutrik Rel Cable to the amplifier output terminals and I decided to use the pre-out 4 din connection in low level. But maybe that's not the real problem, and I would like to know.....
Unfortunately the bass performance at low level are significantly lower (more slam) than Hi Level (more depth)
I hope you will soon solve the problem with your Uniti
Cheers
Anto
Hi Anto, thanks for your reply. I have connected to the high level input, following the guidance in the REL operating manual. All seems to work fine. I will disconnect the REL and test whether this is causing the sound on/off problem, but at present I'm reluctant to touch anything as it's working, and has been powered up continuously since Christmas Eve!
ciao
David
Naim advise not to connect to a subwoofer from the amplifier speaker outputs - if you want to connect via high level, take signal from the speaker end. Do not use the supplied REL lead with Naim amps. Richard Lord and REL used to offer useful advice and help for Naim owners here, but this seems to not be the case in recent years. If you connect from the amp, you will get, at best, poorer than normal sound, and at worst, an amp under distress, which may result in the amp shutting down. There are plenty of threads on this subject here on this forum.
Tanks Richard, with Rel Neutrik lead is not possible take signal from speaker. Do you think is correct to use the Pre Out 4 Din output from unitilite to Rca input of the sub Rel with a Naim lead ?
You need a different cable to take high level signal from the speakers.
If the REL can accept a pre-amp level signal then yes, you could take it from the Unitilite pre-out. However, you may need to slug the cable with a resistor - ask advice from Naim here, it will depend on the length of the cable and whether the cable is already slugged or not.
Update - having left the Uniti powered up continuously since Christmas Eve, it was "accidentally" switched off this morning! Switching back on again sometime later, it resumed the sequence of powering down and the up again, i.e. sound and main display shutting down and then resuming again some seconds later. So, disconnected the REL and tried again - no change. Then, disconnected the mains plug from the wall and with the on/off switch in the on position, reconnected the mains and powered up, and voila the amp has stayed on. So, subject to some proper testing at the dealer/Naim, my uneducated view is that the power switch on the rear of the amp may be the cause of my problem. REL is also reconnected, and working fine, though I do note the comments passed by other regarding the high level connection. This will also be addressed with the dealer, once the holiday period has passed. Thanks to all for your advice and recommendations. Happy New Year!
