Tidal Premium Service

Posted by: KeithCass on 27 December 2015

Hi

I am a recent subscriber to the Tidal Premium service (I cannot afford the HiFi subscription) but I am unable to stream any files from Tidal through my UnitiLite. I can browse the Tidal service using the Naim App but when I attempt to play a track the system reports 'Can't play. Skipped track'.

Surely Nami's implementation of Tidal does not force you to have the more expensive (like double the price) subscription. I'd much rather use Tidal than Spotify which I abandoned sometime ago.

I note that Tidal uses AAC codec for the premium and FLAC for the lossless. Am I unable to play the AAC files due to the Unitilite not supporting this format..?

I have upgraded to Streamer Version 4.4.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

I don't know if the Naim Tidal integration only supports the 'hifi' subscription, but it wouldn't surprise me.  If you're listening to 320kps, and nothing wrong with that, you'll struggle to beat spotify as a service, which is also available via your streamer.

I seem to remember that Tidal require you to have the Hifi subscription if you are streaming into a device like the Naim streamer. Naim do support AAC.

if you see the message 'can't play' or similar, then Tidal are not giving your device the permission to stream that file with your account details.

if you are happy with lossy encoded files, then Spotify would be the appropriate service to use.

I assume you have tried the free Tidal hifi service trial on your Naim and that worked ok?

I have the same problem. Tidal does not work. I think it"s that it is necessary to fill in your creditcard details. But since I have no ceditcard!

I have the same problem too: with Unitilite, Tidal premium does not work

I'm pretty sure it's correct that you need to use the HiFi version with a Naim streamer. You could confirm this by signing up to the 3 month free trial, which should then work.

If you have an Airport Express on your network you could connect this to your streamer with an optical lead and stream Tidal Premium from an iPhone or iPad.

The other thing to check is the Quality setting in the app.  If the Tidal integration will work at lower quality levels, then I would guess the setting will need to match the quality level in your subscription.  It defaults to HiFi I believe.

In the app go to Settings - Input Settings - Tidal - Quality.

Nudgerwilliams,

good news man, your advice was correct. I changed the default setting from my Ipad and now Tidal premiun version works. I'm listening the Beatles from my Unitilite version AAC 44.1kHz 323kb/s, not bad

Thank you

Hi Everyone,  Happy New Year, and thanks for your comments on this thread.

But a very big thanks to Nudgerwilliams for his reply and I feel such an idiot for not checking these settings. I was so keen having loaded v 4.4 on my unitilite that I dived straight in to Tidal and got zero out! I have since taken the three month free subscription at HiFi quality and it is  A-mazing but I just cant afford it at the moment so I will revert to premium at the end of the trial period.

I did research everything I could on the Naim & Tidal sites/press releases/blogs etc. and it all pointed to only supporting the HiFi which is weird and slightly annoying considering how much time I wasted.  Never mind, clever Nudgerwilliams has sorted it for me.

Thanks again Nudgerwilliams.

Glad it is sorted for you.  Just a lucky guess on my part.

Have the excact same problem. Setting the quality to High dosent help.

Any ideers?

Hi Larshp,

That's odd as the tip from Nudger worked first time for me.  Though this setting only came to light after I had taken the 3 month HiFi trial.  So my testing of the High setting was under different circumstances to you it would seem. I guess you don't wish to take the three month HiFi trial to see if that helps. Sadly the quality on HiFi is really good and I am fearful that I wont want to downgrade at the end despite the cost!

I really like Tidal but I am disappointed that you cannot share playlists with other Tidal users plus, like other platforms, if you have more than one user in the household with different tastes all your music is mixed together.

I hope you get to sort your problems soon as the integration with Naim is really good in my opinion. I'll look out for your solution when it comes.

Hi keithcass

found the solution (with help from Naim Support).

Mail from Naim:

Can you change your password so that it contains nothing but alphanumeric characters then log out of your account in the app, power cycle your Qute again, then re-login on the app and confirm whether or not your account is still not working.

everything is working fine after that.

Thanks

Lars
