naim app - Album showing as single tracks?

Posted by: musicnuttyboy on 29 December 2015

Hi............I've searched on the forum but can find nothing to help with my issue so any help would be appreciated.

I've just downloaded Roger Waters The Wall (Live) but in the naim app it's showing as 29 separate tracks and not an album. Consequently it won't play as an album and stops at the end of each track. Please see below.

Does the naim app have a maximum track number and if so would splitting in 2 be the answer, or could it possibly be my media server which is Asset UPnP running on a QNAP NAS?

Thanks in advance.

What is in the 'Album' metadata for each track? They need to have a common name to 'bundle' them together when playing as an album. I'm also suspicious of odd characters, so removing that underscore for the 1st track might help (and certainly won't harm).

It's nothing to do with the app. Have a look at the metadata, as suggested above.

The Naim app is quite happy with a lot more than 29 tracks (I have one album with about 70).

The problem is probably that the downloaded album does not conform to the Naim required structure which is: root/artist name/album name/files of tracks.

So in this case, Roger Waters/The Wall/track files or Roger Waters/Roger Waters The Wall/track files

if you adjust the structure accordingly and rescan, I think you might find it is all ok.

Might be some metadata detail too, but if the file structure is wrong, no tweaking of the metadata will make any difference to your basic problem of each track appearing as a separate album (which is what is happening).

Not sure I agree with Mr. Hendon, as I don't organise my files that way, yet the problems along these lines I've run into have all been solved by metadata editing.

Hi, it doesnt matter one iota about the folder structure; the files could be all over the place, or in an artist folder called "pink floyd", but it's the metadata that will say it's artist = Roger Waters. I strongly suspect, and it has been mentioned already, the album name is null across all the tracks and just needs to be applied, the same value to each track.

Please check that in the directory in which these tracks are stored, there are no sub directories within.

Thanks everyone for the input.

Having checked the metadata the track numbers were showing as 1-29 of "blank" which i've now corrected. Also the disc number was showing as 1 on track 1-16 and 2 on tracks 17-29. With both corrected the album shows and plays as an album.

I guess it's to much to ask for the download sites to get the metadata correct!

Thanks again.

Sorry for the bum steer from me. I hadn't appreciated how different it was with a NAS than with the downloads folder on a Unitiserve. Anyway I've learnt something from the more knowledgeable guys here and I'm glad Roger Waters is all sorted too!

Easy way to 'repair' metadata is via iTunes.

Just load up the album on your computer, correct it, and re-load to your NAS.

I wouldn't call that easy.

Easy would be to use a metadata editor directly on the files on the NAS.

The approach I use is to get all the metadata sorted out while the download is in my computer. I then copy it to the NAS. If I miss something, I simply edit the album while it's on the nas, using dbpoweramp. The issue raised by the OP seems to happen quite often with downloads of double albums. The original first disc is numbered 01/10 to (for example) 10/10 with the disc 1/2. The second is numbered in the same way but with disc 2/2. The first disc shows as an album but the second just as tracks. So I change the disc to 1/1 on all tracks, and then label the tracks 1/20 to 20/20. This is all done with dbpoweramp.

I then make sure all are in the same folder and numbered 1 to 20 in the structure, using windows explorer. This is not necessary for the album to play properly, but it makes it easier to find tracks on the nas should they need any editing in the future.

I hope that makes sense.

100% makes sense HH,  & who doesn't do it that way anyhow.

In addition to doing it on the PC first,   I leave the edited copy on the PC until I'm well satisfied the NAS does it all correctly.  If it doesn't then I edit the PC copy, then overwrite the NAS copy.
