Just for the Record

"Just for the Record".....I'm sure there is a Pun in there somewhere
Has anybody figured out how this ranking system actually works ?
Forum rank is based on quantitative metrics and does not necessarily provide an indication of the qualitative aspects

I'm devastated !
But what might those quantitative metric be ? Does anybody know ?
And are we sure they're not subjective ?
The more a member posts, the higher their rank
And what's the point of it? Just asking.
Is it a ploy to massage one's ego (I'm top man) in order to generate activity?
I'm not criticising the forum contributors, but questioning the people who instigated it.
That's a good question Graham. Might encourage undesirables to leave or even sell up and move on ?
Richard wasn't able to explain how it worked when it first came on board with Hoopla. And it seems even he can't switch it off, even though it doesn't seem to serve any known purpose!
We used to have "Karma" levels when Adam was around, so the concept of "Ranking" has been with us for some time.
Still haven't figured it out...

You looked rather hansom way back then Richard
Like a cab.
Just guessing, but I suspect the calculation gives a higher weighting to more recent activity so some 'old' activity points don't count as heavily as 'newer' activity points.

BTW is that a sneaky picture of a prototype 'Statement' streamer?
That white thing could be the new MegaLumina interconnect, with massaging by hand rather than being entrusted to the Snaic Shaker.

At first glance I mis-read your "cab"
The forum's spell-checker isn't very good today..........but I'll leave the goof in place, otherwise your comment won't mean much.............
Few of my comments mean much, so I doubt anyone would notice.

Mike
I think it gives higher weighting to posts by newer members but doesn't reflect this in the Points Score.
I think it also takes account of "Likes" and "Followers" etc again, without this being reflected in the Points
I also think you get Mega-points for saying just how TERRIFIC Hoopla is
This looks a lot like the first computer I worked with all those years ago.
Mind you, this one is more advanced - its program is entered by reading the Super Lumia loop (aka punched tape), whereas mine was programmed using wires plugged into a board.
It makes me wonder how many living rooms the electronics in my Naim server would have taken up back then. Kinda glad no-one had figured out how to digitise sound yet... life was so simple... all I aspired to was a tin of good quality needles for my phonograph.
PS - I think Hoopla is TERRIFIC

We used punched cards to start with. Punching each rectangle with a prodder. Punched tape followed and seemed a luxury ! We (Nottingham University) shared a KDF9 ? computer with Manchester running a code called Fortran ? No Microsoft or Word or Excel or internet - just write your own program.............

What did you have to do Graham, to get your avatar to appear at the top of the "Current Visitors" gallery ?
Mine used to be somewhere on the gallery, but unless there are fewer than about 50 visitors, it can't be detected. Even then, it's at the end of the list !
I am really upset .......................
Mike-B posted:It seems a load of dangly bits with not much math or logic involved, no wonder Richard can't work it out.......... Just a quick check showsDon with 73,558 points with a community rank @ #12.Hook has 72,481 points & rank @ #8I have 71,019 points & rank @ #10
It just doesn't seem fair, does it Mike
...with many thanks to our feathered friend...........
I was looking down the list and the name Naim Nymph stands out. Is the person behind the name Naim Nymph actually a female? I hope so, its nice to have a female amongst us in this sad male oriented hobby.
Naim nymph is indeed female, a lovely lady called Debs.
