Naim app: album artwork gone missing

Posted by: Nick Rich on 01 January 2016

Having had some problems with viewing artist / album info correctly in the Naim app on my iPhone, I cleared the image and UPnP caches as I used to sometimes in the old app.  This fixed the problem, but now all my album artwork has disappeared.  How do I get it back please?  I've tried resetting the app, but no luck.

Thanks for the help.

I think you may have to rescan your music store (NAS?) so if using a NAS, it will be done using that interface. Or if it's an HDX (or whatever) you'll have to use that app to rescan the music store on it.

Hi

I assume that all your artwork is inserted correctly into their appropriate folders. The actual image should be a JPG - only this will work.

I would recommend rescanning your NAS.

Thanks for the replies.  I've done 'rescan content directories' in Twonky Server on my NAS drive, but it's made no difference.  There is also an option to 'rebuild database' but that tells me I will lose all customised metadata, so I only want to do that as a last resort.

I have most artwork as Folder.jpg in the same folder as the flac files.  I should add that I can still see all artwork in the Naim app on my iPad, but on the iPhone, nothing.

Have you tried deleting and re-installing the app on your phone? You would lose the playlist created in the app though I guess.

One last resort: delete the iPhone app and load it up again.

I would not touch the server data anymore. If you get a chance, buy an external drive and copy all your server data to it. Keep it disconnected from the network - a simple but effective back up.  This way should anything happen to either the NAS drive or your metadata you can always go back to an 'external' source.

If you had said  "....  I can still see all artwork in the Naim app on my iPad, but on the iPhone, nothing" at the beginning,  it would be straight into Ospreys suggestion to delete & re-install the iPhone app.

+1 Mike-B

It's a pretty big clue to the source of the problem if it's working on one device but not another. At least, when asking for help, it would be good to include the most basic diagnostic information. This forum isn't tech support.

Thanks again for all the replies and apologies if I didn't give all the information I should have in the first place.  I appreciate your patience.  I've now deleted and reinstalled the app, but still no artwork.

So I think I need to go back to basics here, if you can bear with me, and give a bit more detail.   At the bottom level under UPnP servers, I see my NAS drive (TS212) and also TwonkyMedia.  I've always accessed my music by going to TwonkyMedia, then Music, then Artist / Album.  Here I still see no artwork on the iPhone.

However, if instead I go to TS212, then Music, then Artists, I DO see the artwork for some artists and when I go to an album, I see artwork for that album.  I've never used the app this way before.  Can someone explain what is going on and which option I should use?  Sorry if this is all very basic stuff, but I really don't understand how this all hangs together.

I'm not sure what you mean or what you are doing with " .... go to TS212, then music  ....or....  go to TwonkyMedia, then music ..." etc.

I open my iPad & touch the app & it opens & I select NAS (thats what Naim originally named UPnP) & I browse the NAS "Music" share  according to how I've set the NAS to browse .   So I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean by "go to TS212 ....or....  go to TwonkyMedia"

That aside,  please check your app settings to be sure you have NOT checked (ticked) the UPnP compatibility mode

Twonky Media Server is a piece of software which resides on your NAS.

The two views you describe are:

  1. Bare NAS
  2. Twonky Media

Simplifying grately:

With option 1 your streamer will 'pull' the information from the NAS

With option 2 Twonky Media will 'push' the data to your streamer.

Mike - it's the first screen (i.e. root level) on the streamer that is being described here.

Posted on: 02 January 2016 by Mike-B

OK,  but still don't understand why go there,  my streamer root screen shows NAS only, its Synology but does not show its MediaServer,  it goes straight to NAS, music share, album folder names.

I'm not a tWonkey user so I'll butt out

Posted on: 02 January 2016 by Adam Zielinski

Me neither

My streamers show:

* MusicNAS - not to be used

* UnitiServe - this is the one to use

I gues it's down to individual architectures of various manufacturers (mine is by QNAP).

Posted on: 02 January 2016 by Nick Rich

This is getting more and more complicated!  It looks like people have different things showing according to their setup.  As Adam says, these are the options I see under UPnP on the first screen.  I'm using a QNAP NAS drive if that is relevant.

Mike: Yes, UPnP compatibility mode is unticked.

Adam: So are there any pros / cons using option 1 or 2 or doesn't it matter?  Why do you say, in your case, UnitiServe is the one to use and not MusicNAS?

Still no explanation as to why the artwork under TwonkyMedia refuses to reappear.......

I think I've just answered my own question.  If I go down the TS212 route and start playing an album, it plays the first track and then stops.  So back to TwonkyMedia with no artwork.....

As you have a QNAP I suggest you download Asset or Minimserver. Twonky is really a bit rubbish.

Posted on: 02 January 2016 by Nick Rich

Thanks, I'll investigate those.  So you think it is Twonky which is at fault and not the Naim app?  If I clear the image cache in the Naim app, artwork is gone for ever?  Surely it isn't supposed to do that?

Posted on: 02 January 2016 by hungryhalibut

The Naim app only shows what the server sends it. If you clear the image cache, all the album covers reappear (or not, in your case) the next time you fire up the app.

I use Minim, which is really good and I'd recommend it. I've seen Asset working, but have not used it myself.

I see from the thread that HH has already suggested an alternative media server soft. I also find Twonky a bit weak.

To answer your question: my streaming network is asministered by a UnitiServe SSD with QNAP NAS used as an external network store /share. In total I run 4 NAIM streamers in different rooms. Each streamer is connected to a root directory of the UnitiServe SSD (option 2 in my example above). NAIM App on various iDevices is simply my remote control, where I choose a 'room' that I want to control, and off it goes...

As to why each of my streamers also sees a MusicNAS? I don't really care too much about that part as long as the rest works.

Album artwork gone missing;

Got the same problem recently on some albums; Albumart just vanished, rescan, checking tags and folders, restart app........ nothing helps

Using the naim app on an ipad with Asset UPnP running on a raspberry pi.

On the same raspberry also Logitech Mediaserver is running: no problem in showing album artwork on the Naim app.

Must be a problem concerning Asset or interaction Asset/Ipad/Naim app ??

Anyone else with the same problem or maybe more important: a solution ?

Wish all a happy streaming in 2016.

Try deleting the app from your iDevice and loading it up again from the AppStore.

Posted on: 03 January 2016 by Nick Rich

I'd be interested to hear if that works for you - it didn't for me.

I've been reading up on Minim - looks very promising - so thanks for the tip on that one.

Posted on: 03 January 2016 by hungryhalibut

Yes, Minim is very good and easy to use once set up. It even manages to transcode from FLAC to WAV and to something different for the Roberts radio we use in the kitchen. Setting Minimwatch on the laptop is a bit fiddly, and making sure Java is working properly, but once that's done it's very solid - says he, touching wood!

If you find any issues Simon, the developer, is really helpful, via the Minim forum. The software is free, but it's good to make a donation.

Reïnstalling the Naim app didn't result in a change in my set-up
