Steve Miller Band. Recall The Beginning ... A Journey From Eden. On Capitol lime green label from 1972. Psychedelic, bluesy, folksy. Artistic and creative. Fun to listen to SM before his commercial success.

Bruce Springsteen. Wrecking Ball. On CD from 2012. Nice album. Very Springsteen-esque, with an overall spiritual feel. Well integrated infusions from gospel, rap, and Irish folk add a nice interest to the sound.

Yes - a great album and I much prefer Miller before he hit with The Joker, although I have not heard his more recent blues based albums. I see him as part of the very creative San Francisco scene in the early days. My favourite is probably Sailor and Boz Scaggs was also in the band then.

Always been a fan of his voice and a great number of his tracks, this title track is a great start to a good album.

First this

Then a bit of this

So I can luxuriate in my system's new-found shimmer from fettling with ethernet and mains cables. Best free upgrade I have ever made. These albums are sounding particularly fine now!

Hookfoot 1st album original vinyl. I'd never heard of them before but picked it up cheap as it looked interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

They were DJM records session musicians who frequently backed Elton and at one point Caleb Quayle was a member of Hall and Oates.

My favourite of theirs if memory serves me well was Roarin'

Klemperer/Philharmonia: Brahms Symphony No.2  1956 recording

This set has the most inkling of Pastoral feel of Beethoven’s 6th in the beginning. He gives a proper statue and scale to the tune. Perhaps not as down to earth but it has a solid classic rigid structure in place.

Each instrument strand is clear in that some times it’s even fugue like. Beautiful sonority from Philharmonia wind players. Only marred by thin strings of this poor US reissue.

The music does not lose the freshness due to all instruments are heard clearly as well as clever use of pauses preventing from turning it into a gray uninteresting mass. ( it's easy for Brahms tunes to go *goo* ) This got the right temperament and colours for Brahms. It just feels right. It’s a pity that the ending chords do not have the low end heft to make it even memorable finish.

Dear Kuma,

I see that you are having a bit of a Brahmsfest!

Now I have loudspeaker replay going again with a single ESL and using a valve pre-amplier, I thought it would be a fine idea to listen to Klemperer and the Philharmonia in Brahms Two! It is often my favourite Brahms Symphony. Of course I always think that my favourite is the one I am listening to!!!!

May I offer the thought that the latest CD release of this in a boxed set of several CDs for about £2 per disc sounds far better even than the superb Germen Electrola LPs, which really were probably the best LP release of this.

In any case, your later performances are likely to seem rather outclassed after listening to this. Try as I might for thirty years, and nobody seems to have made better recordings of the Brahms symphonies than Klemperer, vintage in era though they now are!

Among the others you listened to, I would definitely suggest that Monteux is also first class, but quite differently prioritised musically speaking. Lighter, an gentler. Definitely Brahms with a Gallic accent, if you like. Neither he nor Klemperer risk the accusation of smoothing out this music into some awful “goo” to use your word!

Best wishes from George

Just pulled out my copy - same vinyl version - for a listen after many years and first time on the Naim, with a lot newly revealed. It's very good - with Maurice, another Miller alter ego (the Joker was at least the third) on side 1 - but it's really side 2 that grabs me. That was one of the characteristics of LP listening in the past for me - often when I pulled out a record to listen, I would tend to put on the same side rather then listen to it all. I wonder how many records I have that I know one side much better than the other. Expectations changed with CDs and now I am much more likely to listen to a whole LP as one side seems rather short. But don't get me started on 45 RPM albums!
