Really enjoying this album flagged up by Bruce Woodhouse in "the best music of 2016 thread". It has a real mid sixties to mid seventies West Coast of America vibe to it very reminiscent of all that was going on in the years either side of Woodstock. Psychedelic alternative rock for sure and not ever getting folksy which is a very big plus for me, music the that could easily pass for what was "underground music" all those decades years ago. A great recommendation thanks Bruce and one that I am now buying.

It can be listened to in full here:

Marillion, Clutching at Straws, excellent band who produced consistently great albums and damned good live with it.  Flac via Audirvana/Hugo

Great minds think alike - I had a Marrilion night tonight. My favourite depends on mood - most commonly Script or Misplaced Childhood.

Agree they were a great band live - saw them more times than I can remember back in the 80s, though I went off them after Fish left.

John Mellencamp. Freedom's Road. On CD from 2007. First listen and another step closer to having Johnny Cougar's complete studio discography. One more quality album, albeit with the heavy compression and reverb sound Mellencamp has embraced in the 21st Century. It boogies nonetheless.

I was playing this in the car yesterday & now at home marvelling at the raw power of the drums on "When the Levee breaks"

Nick,

There's been a bit written about the sound of the drums on that track. Greg Milner discusses it in his book "Perfecting Sound Forever ...". If you have interest, the Wikipedia page for "When the Levee Breaks" provides details on the recording of the drums.

Jackson Browne. Standing In The Breach. On CD from 2015. First listen. It's a respectable effort that finds Jackson striking a balance between his accessible tunesmithing of the 70's and his latter political messages. He sticks primarily to his lower vocal range throughout. There's plenty of steel/slide guitar and several immediately likable tracks that, no doubt, The Eagles of yesteryear could have turned into pure gold.

Great album, rock combined with a bluesy feel...

Script is playing now. What an unbelievably Great first Album.

I only got to see Marillion with Fish once. It was my first every concert and was at the Milton Keynes Bowl, the Garden Party tour. It was Brilliant.

I love the first 4 albums with Fish. Hogarth does a good job for them now, but for me Marillion with Fish is best.

Agreed, I saw them with Fish many times and have seen them since he left but it seems tragic to me that Fish left when they were at their height because they were making great songs together.  I know that he hated the last albuum and they parted on acrimonious terms but they all seem friendly enough again now and my wife is still hoping that at some stage they will get together and do a couple of one offs.  In the meantime he is enjoying some heights of his own at the moment with an excellent last album and a good live act.

Is it possible to OD on Marillion??? N'ah!!

I have recently seen both Fish and Steve Rothery playing the Full Misplaced Childhood album 30th Anniversary tribute live.

While the Rothery Band had by FAR the best musicians and was a fantastic show It just could not match the Passion and crowd engagement Fish delivered.

Posted on: 17 March 2016 by dayjay

Hm, I went up to Scotland to watch Fish do it in his home town but would have liked to see Rothery do it.  I can see a Marillion night coming for tonight!

I had to, didn't I!

That is all 4, not quite in order, but what a way to spend a nice Thursday off work.
