More murky chug (often terribly recorded) on vinyl. My favourite Fall album:

Wonderful duo kora playing, and fantastic sound (unlike Grotesque!)

A neglected ECM that I should play more often.

Original vinyl... great album and a bargain of the moment  on the River for just over  a tenner plus P&P.

Good shout..............streaming it at the mo' (see what I did there?), on Tidal.

Good, isn't it?

Don't know whether you spotted my earlier recommend for Michael Burks.........Make it Rain?

Strangely, it has been removed from Tidal over the last few days, so I've ordered it from the river, as it's so good.

The blues are dead...............not!

Dave.

Dave,

I checked earlier on and not available on Tidal but I had a listen on Spotify. Good ol' blues and very  BB king(is) with a pinch of Robert Cray.  I particularly enjoyed "Beggin' Business".  I also listened  to Show of Strength played by Steve above and that also deserves a recommendation.

Cheers,

Tony

Hi Tim, glad you are enjoying Sonya's music.  Good listening, Jeff A

It's a grower.  Tidal

Prompted by Kev's early post. First track I ever listened to by them was Spoilt Victorian Child which was "tame" compared to most of Mark E's and his gang musical offerings. Still, can't ignore them. They are unique!

Good chill out music.  One of Stevee_S's recommendations. Tidal.

Pink Floyd. DSOTM (1973). On MFSL gold CD from 1988. First listen. I already have three other CD versions of this album, but when this is staring at you from the shelf with a $20 price tag you don't have to think too long or hard about grabbing one more.

joerand,

How does this sound?  How does it compare to your other CD's, and to the vinyl, for that matter?

If I can offer a view on DSotM. I have just sold my MFSL CD and was very happy to see the back of it. I think we played it once on the day my wife bought it as a present for me, were completely underwhelmed and it stayed in the racks for the next 20 odd years, as an interesting oddity. We got the disc out the other night and gave it a whirl on the 'new' system and it again failed to inspire either of us, hence the reason to sell it (and it paid for quite a few Discogs purchases of good vinyl).

Compared to my original LP, which has suffered quite a lot of playing, the MFSL was dull and lifeless. Later issues of vinyl, which I also have, are also disappointing.

Hi Charlie,

Besides the other CDs I also have the MFSL vinyl and 4 or 5 other Harvest/Capitol LPs. I have to say that each version brings its own charms to the game. This MFSL gold disc struck me immediately as being particularly "smooth" sounding, without edge, with an especially nice decay on the cymbals and tight yet "plump" bass - if that makes any sense. Maybe akin to those same properties a Hiline imparts to overall SQ. I found some insight into the keyboards that I hadn't heard before. The soundstage is good side-to-side, but nearer the floor and not as tall as the vinyl. The early 1990's CD remasters I have are excellent with an impressive overall soundstage. The 2011 CD remaster is crap as far as my ears are concerned for loudness mastering and lack of dynamics. The early Harvest/Capitol LPs are my favorites, but the copies I own have their share of distracting surface noise during quiet passages. For that reason I play the ultra-quiet MFSL vinyl most often despite its rather "bloomy" bass.

All that said, DSOTM is a paragon of well recorded/engineered music and any version I have (sans the 2011 CD) is a joy to listen to. It's nice to have choices in format for such a great album depending on my mood on any given night. I'm sure the MFSL disc will get its fair share of plays in the future.

So basically you are saying that unless one can source the original vinyl one is better without DSOTM

(according to Discogs there are at least 487 versions available)

Grateful Dead. Terrapin Station (1977). On CD from 1989. Having "Shakedown Street" as my only other Grateful Dead album I've just doubled my Dead catalog. On first play I'm rather surprised with the female lead vocals, chorals, and use of strings. Not sure whether this is an atypical Dead album?

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Mojo. On CD from 2010. First listen. An album full of tubey, bluesy funk both in the guitars and keyboards, and I'd call the title apt for the overall feel. Petty's patent psychedelia sound is present as well. It's a good listen, but I'd hesitate to say this one is a standout in his extensive discography.

I had this version and sold it as I found it quite bland - soft and undynamic.

Downloaded yesterday and playing this great throwback to the late sixties psychedelic scene around San Francisco. Good stuff.

Interesting, thanks - I had a listen and a poke around and I see it's Meg Baird on vocals, so that's a recommendation in itself. I seem to remember there was a an English band called Heron in the sixties - folky?
