A fine album nicely engineered too.

Yes indeed, an absolute classic - it's one of my most played over the years.  I remember buying the CD after hearing it playing in a "record shop" in Macclesfield soon after its release.

A quick heads up. SKY Arts 1 are playing David Gilmour's Live in Gdansk at 22:25 tonight.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out

On Vinyl

Part of the Jazz at 33 1/3 publication. A good way to get into Jazz if like me you are a complete novice. Every album has been very good regarding the quality of the pressing and the music has been very good. Enjoying this part work a lot.

There is an interesting piece on the soundstage of one of the tracks on this album on the hifi corner website describing where about (spatially) the instruments appear throughout the track http://www.hificorner.co.uk/bl...eth-HL5-Plus-Review/

Last album from the great man. Compiled from tracks he had been working on prior to his demise.    Some very decent tracks.

Too much coffee and feel the need to punish my speakers with this one.

I have 3 copies of the Ports album. Met him once when he toured with the Moddy Blues. Warm genuine guy shame about his untimely death

Yes, so young and such a tragic death. I've ordered Ports of the Heart  on CD and Isle of View on Vinyl.

Cheers for that, Ewe.

Grateful Dead. Terrapin Station (1977). On CD from 1989. Having "Shakedown Street" as my only other Grateful Dead album I've just doubled my Dead catalog. On first play I'm rather surprised with the female lead vocals, chorals, and use of strings. Not sure whether this is an atypical Dead album?

These really aren't  the Dead albums I would recommend as the beginning of a collection! I think Sunrise was the only time Donna Godchaux sang a lead vocal on a studio album and the production by Keith Olsen was an idea of Arista's to sell more records. In my opinion, the stronger songs on the two albums are more enjoyable live. However, it is true that many Deadheads rate Terrapin Station. Shakedown Street was nominally produced by Lowell George but he was not very involved it seems. If you want another Dead studio album try Working Man's Dead or American Beauty - they are classics!

Clive,

Thanks for the response, very helpful. I like Shakedown St but no too hot on Terrapin Stn. I'm trying to get myself better acquainted with The Dead and Dylan. Both have such extensive discographies with mostly good albums, but also maybe a few misses and it's hard to know where to start. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the two you suggested.

Live Dead & Anthem of the Sun & Mars Hotel...

G

Throw him in the deep end!! My suggestions for live albums, if Working Man's Dead or American Beauty go well, would be Skull and Roses:

or Europe 72:

Thanks to all for your responses. Posting pics is great as I still have a decent eidetic memory and will tend to grab used CDs based on recall of the cover art. Ice cream cone to the forehead works great for that. As far as names go, American Beauty is one I can easily remember (I also googled the cover art) . Cheers!

Beck. Midnight Vultures. On CD from 1999. First listen. Few got rhythm, funk, and groove like this skinny dude. The first half of the album especially is loaded with PRaT.

joerand, we should talk about this the next time we are together for a music listening party at someone's house. I have plenty, lots, most of what is available with respect to Grateful Dead music. I do agree with one of the above posters... the 2 1970 studio albums, "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead" are two great studio efforts for a band turning the corner from being a flat out psychedelic band of the late 60's. But for really engaging live stuff recorded I second the motion for "Skull and Roses" and "Europe 72."

Both great choices on your part. I had to take advantage of 65ยบ dry weather and spend the day doing yard work - not that I mind sweating outside during March in Seattle. Unfortunately, missed a day of March Madness with some classic matchups for the early rounds. Tomorrow looks like rain .
