In case anyone was too pressed for time or opportunity to play this clip, please come back to it at some point.
Jeff recommended Jerry Joseph to me many years ago and he's just great, but the solo he unwinds from about 8:50 is getting on for the best I've ever heard. Utterly awesome, emotional playing.

Thanks for your comments, Gary. On the many many occasions I have seen Jerry his soloing has taken me many places I have never been before. He rarely noodles, even on extended solos as here he always completes the "trip" and brings it seamlessly back to the song foundation. This song was written when he toured Lebanon, Israel, and the Middle East a couple years ago. He and the Jackmormons are essentially a world-wide touring bar band, often times playing to crowds of 50 or less people. He makes it to England at least every couple years. He does perform solo at times and can play acoustic with just as much power as the electric. It is the only job he has ever had. He is clean and sober again and that is when he is at his very best. Pleased you enjoyed it, Gary, and hope others will take the time if interested.
For trivia, the bassist is Steven James Wright who was lead guitarist for Jerry in the 90's Boulder, Colorado based reggae band Little Women. At times they play 6 strings together and lets just say it is special. The drummer is Steve Drizos, husband of The Decemberists keyboard player Jenny Conlee. Other guitar player is Jeff Crosby who also performs with his own band Jeff Crosby and the Refugees.
Hard working musicians on the road 200+ days a year making a living. regards, Jeff A

Steeple ~ Wolf People
Their debut album gives more than a nod back to seventies prog rock, well played guitars and drums with not a synth' in earshot. Really enjoyable psych rock for those who like Tull, Wishbone Ash, Airport, Quintessence and so forth.

Excellent post, Gary. Enjoyed the video. Hadn't heard of Jerry Joseph before but I'm sure going to explore his work now.

Hi Mike, just a couple more comments on Jerry. His studio albums don't always convey the same aspects of Jerry's talents that a live show does. If you search, he has a very decent website, but you can also access live stuff at both YouTube and at archives.com which is a hosting site for the arts and includes a live music archive which has hundreds of authorized bootlegged live shows from the last 15 years.
Jerry's songwriting is a bit "different". It is about imagery. He is very well-read and world travelled and is constantly writing down phrases and thoughts which he revisits to create his songs. He starts with a title and then builds the songs. The songs don't necessarily "tell a story" but multiple sets of 2 or 4 lines will create imagery that can be thought-provoking and thought of long after the song is completed. His favorite topics are religion, sex, drugs and politics but he has written children's type songs as well. The album I originally adhered to was "Love and Happiness". "Conscious Contact" and "Everything Was Beautiful" are relatively mainstream, "Goodlandia" is the acoustic side of the band when it was a trio and his music is available at Spotify under both his name and the band name. The title of the new one comes from a comment his 6 yoa son made to him similar to "Dad, you will be dead by the time your rocket gets to Mars".
Perhaps that is of some interest. Thanks for your time (and anyone elses) reading this. I don't mean to "promote" him but feel he is gifted and am responding to your comment to Gary and sometimes we enjoy the more we know about an artist. I haven't seen Jerry live in about twelve years, but will never forget the intense five years my wife and I spent "following" him in the early years of '00. Good listening, Jeff A
Just downloaded this afternoon from bandcamp...

Brilliant stuff, Jeff, thank you. One the reasons I love this thread so much. Such variety and generosity to share knowledge. My music collection has benefited immensely. ![]()
Mike

Such a lovely voice: grace, power and emotion. A tragedy she died so young.
Quite different from what I have heard from him so far, 1st run - so no conclusions so far....

A quick follow up. I've just ordered 'Conscious Contact' and 'Everything was Beautiful'. Will take a couple of weeks to get the CDs but I will post again when I've had a listen. Cheers.

Prompted by KevinW's write-up of seeing Mr Gilmour at the RAH.

You are welcome, Mike. I hope you find something there to enjoy. Jerry is quite popular on the jam band circuit and has very close ties to Drive-By Truckers, and Widespread Panic, both of whom use to open for Jerry many years ago and then went on to relatively bigger successes than Jerry has himself. Conscious Contact was recorded and produced by Dave Schools of Widespread Panic and Everything Was Beautiful was recorded and produced by another Pacific NW artist named Pete Droge from the Seattle area. I will be curious to hear your comments. We all enjoy sharing artists we like but my success rate in sharing Jerry has not been very high. That's okay, I don't take that as a reflection on me or him. People's musical likes and paths can diverge as easily as converge. I enjoy him a great deal and he has exposed me to a great many other artists I have enjoyed. I hope you find some enjoyment in your exposure to him. regards, Jeff A
