What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
For those who liked as well my recommendation for the Luke Howard Trio, please check this one out as well. Is very good as well...

Very happy to see the number of recordings featuring Julius Röntgen steadily increase. Röntgen is a first rate second tier composer, first in line of the benchwarmers if you will. Always tuneful, frequently inspired and occasionally - very occasionally, but in at least one work on this disc - fit for the premier league.

Original UK vinyl:

Quite entertaining a bit of poppy type of jazz, other people might call it fushion music....

Recorded Live in the Studio prior to his 1990 tour and the sq is truly excellent.
Very enjoyable, happy I got it yesterday. Will see her live at Noth Sea Jazz Festival in July..

(2016) CD
Arrived in yesterday's mail. First listen. Happened across this project a few weeks ago. Very interesting. Information about this album and the Silk Road Ensemble.

Another one that's been on very heavy rotation of late.

Sergei Rachmaninov: Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom Op. 31
Music with a definite up-pittiness to it - literally - from one of the great, trusted composers. All great music for me is spiritual - whether words are connected to it or not. I feel the same spiritual emotion from this great music as I do from any of Rachmaninov's great works (which mostly include a piano) or Bach, or Beethoven or Brahms and so on. It is sad that so many take the Donald Trump view of everything and continue to paint a rotten picture of everything that is good.
I may stand alone on this but I personally do not seek (or need) music to entertain me. There is plenty of music specifically for this purpose but the most special music is that which points to something greater in this universe and outside of this 'commercialized' world. It is something that elates your soul and very being in a way that words or intellect cannot. The great composers understood this and we have there music as proof. Yet, you can own a light and even have a light bulb in it but you have to flip the switch and open your eyes a bit to see the light. Spending time with these great composers is the 'switch.'
The bells and the low bass throughout this music takes me to another world. Simply marvellous.

Their one and only album...which is a pity.

"A Moon Shaped Pool", Radiohead's new album, which they're playing in full on BBC6 Music. On tracking three and I'm loving it so far. In fact, I so like it I've just ordered the £60 Special Edition!

Between yard work and a walk along the river, my kind of Mother's Day.
