2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
Then switched to another interesting one during the workout..

Mengelberg/Concertgebouw : Mahler Symphony 4 1939 Recording
Astonishingly clear and immediate pre-historic mono live recording. Occasionally audience’s coughing noise is heard in quiet passages but all’n’all excellent dynamics and clarity for the vintage.
Mahler's 4th is a bit of a struggle for me but Mengelberg keeps me entertain for the most part with his witty and colourful direction which is always on the move.
So down to earth and friendly, this is like how Toscanini would conduct. A lot of human interests woven in and thematic motifs are always presented clearly. Horn riffs as well as Adagio remind me of his 5th symphony. Soprano comes through clear with her penetrating voice even tho she gets burried in certain spots.
I've read somewhere that Mahler loved Concetgebouw and sometimes he would tweak his score to suite the acoustics of the venue. Certainly when this symphony was premiered in 1904, Mengelberg was there taking all cues from Mahler himself.
Bruce Springsteen. The Ghost Of Tom Joad. On CD from 1995. Quiet contemplative music, mostly acoustic with a lonely and haunting vocal reverb. A tone that harkens back to "Nebraska" from 15 years earlier.
A great record Randy, I'll give it a spin later this morning before work.
Cheers, C.
Chris,
Should be a nice acoustic test of timbre on things
Enjoy!

Love it on CD. Hope it gets a new vinyl release.
You can still pick up copies of the original vinyl pressings. The deluxe above is never officially going to see the light of day.

I'll assume you haven't shopped the cost of original vinyl, not that Neil would make any re-issue an affordable offering
Anyhow, it sounds great on CD as does all NY's stuff.
Neil Young. Are You Passionate. On CD from 2002. Great stuff from Neil and for whatever reason tonight I'm struck by the all-out Motown sound on "Be With You", complete with tambourine. and Supreme-esque bass line.

You can pick up copies of a certain online auction site for about 40 squid. Not sure what the going rate is for vinyl these days as I don't buy any. My LP12 has been sitting in a drawer for some years . Think I will need to dig it out and do a project on it.

Don't know much about timbre but when the band joins Bruce's voice on Youngstown it's a spine-tingling moment!

This evening's / early morning music -
Moon Taxi - Daybreaker
(2015) CD
I like this one, first album I have from the band. Just don't get a chance to play it much with all the other new-to-me music lying about.
Eleanor Friedberger - Personal Record
(2013) CD
It's been lying about for a bit, but first listen. I've been listening to 'Last Summer' for some time. Her latest, 'New View' will be released Jan 22 in the US.
Joy Kills Sorrow - Darkness Sure Becomes This City
(2010) CD
Happened upon this band after hearing their cover of "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service.
Great album. I didn't realize at the time I visited the concert - but I actually was at this specific concert during which the recording was made.
The Bonniwell Music Machine. A Christmas gift. Pretty good it is too, in fact I'd put it on par with the original 'Talk Talk' Music Machine. Some great garage punk mixed with popsike, folk and cod-soul.
Tobes, you won't find many bigger Bowie fans than me, but the reason why that album is "underrated" is because it's, well, crap. Perhaps his worst, along with Never Let Me Down. Although I admit "Loving The Alien" is a decent song.
This is the 2004 CD, which has bonus tracks, audience noise and the correct song order. The brilliant Murray-Davies-Alomar rhythm section is in fine form:
The great Charles Bradley live in 2013 . Tearing the house down.
Next up another of his live gigs from 2011 radio station promo set.

Appreciate that, but Bowie sounds like he's having a ball with himself with this album.. And with Tina ..
Interesting but not as good as his Invisible Hour album. Blood from Stars has a few tracks with rather distracting scratchy and crackly sound effects. Not necessary and a bit distracting IMHO. Interesting though.
On CD:-
Nice soothing end to the working day.
