Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Playback. On 6 HDCDs from 1995. Popular songs, outtakes, B-sides, and early stuff from the Mudcrutch days. Several recent threads on HDCDs have inspired me to pull this box set off the shelf. The SQ is notably tight and fast on any CDP and becomes bigger and more dimensional on a HDCD capable player. I've always found Petty a stickler for SQ and these discs rival any of his LPs. SQ aside, its simply a great collection of rock music.

you are probably aware that there is a ( 4 hour ! ) Documentary on the band "Runnin' down a dream" by Peter Bogdanovich -  it was shown over here on BBC4  three or four years ago.  Charted the history of the band from Mudcrutch onwards.  I recorded it and still dip into it occasionally.  I think you can buy the DVD on the river.  Strangely, (& to my delight)  my then 11 year old son became obsessed with the band and watched the video constantly!  His tastes have changed somewhat since then

Classy Scandinavian stuff with the usual high quality ACT sound.

Marius Duda Riverside's lead singer and driving force, his solo projects continue with this lovely prog rock. For me his solo work shades that of Riverside.

Staying with Mr Mehldau.  WAV CD rip. I think I prefer the quartet-based tracks on this one.

London Grammar 'If You Wait' CD ripped to NS01, streamed through NDS whilst cooking the dinner. Why? Simply because it is a red hot brilliant album!

Kletzki/Philharmonia: Mahler Symphony 4  1957 recording Mono

This was my first exposure to Mahler's music and remembering rather dull.I recall my then low spec Sondek was not tracking this record too well either and thought beautiful packaging but the sound quality is less than stelar. Mahler's 4th is supposed to be the most accessible but I moved on. So far I love the odd number symphonies. ( 1, 5, 7, 9 )

I am giving this record a spin again.
Much more lower noise than I remember and this time its excellent clarity and instrument separation bringing out excellent immediacy and transparency. Massed strings still gets bleached out but the Kandid is doing a great job tracking.

Performance wise, tho I still don't get on with it.
Not as dramatic as others I have heard so far. Straight away there is less of playfulness and child like innocence compared to Mengelberg set. Winds sound a bit sat on rather than showing various emotional states. There are some good spots that I missed in the past; good tension and rhythmic quality in solo violin in 2nd movement. Bu following 'difficult' 3rd movement is rather uneventful. This is like a Mahler without neurosis and depression. So what's left is pretty mundane without some kind of tricks up conductor's sleeve. Emmy loose's voice is nice, tho.

It's a beautifully recorded mono but it's too conservative for my taste. So far I have not hit a jack pot with any of Kletzki's recording to date.

Hi Kuma. You say you like the odd-numbered symphonies but miss out the 3rd. Was this a mistake or deliberate?  It was my introduction to Mahler and still one of my favourites.  When I was a student in London in the early 80s I was discovering classical music. There was a music shop near Shaftesbury Ave that was run by an enthusiast who would recommend music to me. I hadn't heard any Mahler and this was his suggestion. Led to 4,5,1,2,9 and my favourite, Das Lied. Still find 7 difficult.

Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness

I'm not usually impressed by new bands but C & C blew me away the first time I heard them and this is a fine example of there prog metal sound and a concept album to boot.
