What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
The Best Of ZZ Top. On vinyl from 1984. Good Friday night music - a haw, haw, haw, haw
The Doobie Brothers. The Captain And Me. On original vinyl from 1973. Great record as were all the Doobie's pre-Michael McDonald albums.
Bowie, Eno, Belew...fascinating sounds. Ages like a fine wine.
Small Faces. Greatest Hits - The Immediate Years. Mono remaster from 2014. Fun mod music from the late-60's. Sadly, the band's music seems all but forgotten in my neck of the woods, except for a rare play of "Itchycoo Park".
On CD:-
R.K posted:Hi Kuma. You say you like the odd-numbered symphonies but miss out the 3rd. Was this a mistake or deliberate? It was my introduction to Mahler and still one of my favourites. When I was a student in London in the early 80s I was discovering classical music. There was a music shop near Shaftesbury Ave that was run by an enthusiast who would recommend music to me. I hadn't heard any Mahler and this was his suggestion. Led to 4,5,1,2,9 and my favourite, Das Lied. Still find 7 difficult.
Hi R.K.
I have not heard the Mahler 3rd yet!
I am a classical music novice, so it takes many listening to understand what's going on in Mahler's music.
But some scores are easier than others. ( like 1st is pretty easy ) 7th is pretty tough at first but I came to enjoy and appreciate it as I listen various executions by different conductors. It can be a total disaster with someone with weak organisation skills.
Virgin store downtown Chicago was like your record store in London where store clear will recommend which CDs depending on my taste. They hired a knowledgable sales staff. I miss those good old days.
A little bit of wonderful 80s DB pop to lift my mood..Sounds fantastic on original vinyl.

I think it's clear that you are the best example of a novice......., but what is your favorite version....Would be interested in that...
Started today with this one, decent not memorable...
This is a very good album, good balance between the two players. Hadn't expected it to be so enjoyable...
Elgar: Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, in D
Recorded in April 1926, so only nearly ninety years ago! Electrifying!
ATB from George
Music is great, sound quality could be much better...
WAV Rip from first press CD.

The Whistler&Hustler Session
Bandcamp flac download.
Acoustic piano with a bit of everything thrown in from time to time.
A bit jazy... perhaps too experimental for my tastes.
Second track is a redo of the theme tune from Bullitt. Now this track is excellent; best on the album. I'm finding it hard to stick with the other tracks though.
So some recommendations please for anything else of the same style as the Bullitt track..?
I love Sokolov's playing, hope to see him live again this year...
Jan Johansson - Jazz på svenska
A classic record with Swedish folksongs by jazz pianist Jan Johansson, very nice record available on Tidal.
Starting with this LP
from this box set
and so far the SQ is very good!

This was the version I was introduced to. Still my favourite:
552 @ 10 o clock and I'm having a "Big Daddy Boogie"!!!!!!!
Play it loud Dusty!!!!
I bought this after a review in the guardian last week that intrigued me. It is just fantastic and has barely been out of my CD player since it arrived on Wednesday.

This is one side of Finland. Glad you liked it. There is more if you're interested – this is their 13th album.
