Lili Kraus:  The Complete Parlophone, Ducretet-Thomson and Discophiles Français Recordings (1933 - 1958)

The lives of people born around the beginning of the last century fascinates me.  Lili Kraus is one such individual who lived through two world wars (including being in a Japanese prison camp for two years at the end of the 2nd one).  Her recording career spanned the eras of the 78, the mono LP and the stereo LP and some of her teachers included such extraordinary figures such as Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály and Artur Schnabel.

Maybe it was Schnabel that had the most impact on here since her repertoire mostly centers around Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert.  Reminds me a little of Alfred Brendel.  This is not a bad thing.  It is better to be a specialist and master of what you play rather than be a jack of all trades and play almost everything at an average level.  My first impressions are that the focus is on quick and lean interpretations.

For the time period of the earlier recordings here one expects that the sonic qualities of the recordings is not equal to that which we have from say the 1950's onward but it is very interesting to hear the music and style of playing that may be representative of the time period.  This same comment applies to the Busch Quartet box set.

All in all, I am very glad I found this set as I continue on discovering musicians from this era.

Had some internet issues so have some delayed listening accounts. This album, first listen..., a bit a robust but interesting account of Faure

Conceptual music, with a couple of strong moments at least what I could get in the first run...

Good but not explorative trio jazz. Drums are quite in the forefront...

Strong modern big band album..., intense so you can't listen to two of these after each other..

This is an excellent new version of Brian Eno's classic Discreet Music from 1975. It's  played on 'proper' instruments rather than the original synthesisers, and is available from Bang on a Can's website for a very reasonable $7.99. If you like ambient or minimalist stuff, it's well worth a spin.

Earlier:   The Lone Bellow  -   The Lone Bellow

(2013)   CD

I need to give this a few more listen.  To date I prefer "Then Came The Morning".

Now:   El Vy   -  Return To The Moon

(2015)   CD

First listen.  Collaboration between Matt Berninger (The National) and Brent Knopf (Menomena, Ramona Falls).

Like it so far.

Today's purchase

Overall, this is a lovely art rock album, but its appeal to purist progressive fans may be limited. For those with an appreciation for the 60's psychedelic scene however, it comes very highly recommended.

Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band.

Good album - different feel to most of the other jazz I have - sounds a bit like a "small" big band.

Just kicking back to relax and enjoy Jeff Beck and what must have been a fun week at Ronnie Scotts, Eric Clapton, Imogen Heap and Josh Stone step up later on as do the Playboys on this 2015 special edition.

Awesome record.  I bought the original CD and then 2015 re-issue on vinyl.

(2007)

Time for some more Simon Posford once again in the guise of Younger Brother.

This release is full of amazing musical experiments. "Simon and Benji tried to find new approach to pshychedelic sounds. And these true psychedelic masters did the trick...Guitar sounds and electronic samples fit together in an absolutely dramatic way making this tuneful and interesting work very surprising."
