What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
Tragic what this disease has done to this wonderful talent, and through it all the music still shines. Bless you Glen.
Great fun from 1971 with this CD/DVD combo...
Boulez/Cleveland: Mahler Symphony 4 1998 Recording
Contrasting to both Gielen and Klemperer done in muted grays, this is a colourful and vivid rendition and in my mind, Boulez makes the tune come alive. 2nd movement opens with *deranged* comical violin solo. Boulez here is not afraid to give it an Eastern European flavours. He adds almost Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker like playfulness. 3rd movement feels like lost in a foggy forrest. Lush and moody. The muted horn sounds like ahooting owl. Different moods are well rendered in excellent dynamic contrasts with purposeful use of pauses to keep the interest. Banse’s voice is holograpic and bell like but at times overwhelmed by the orchestra and she sings rather straight without much characterisation. Also I am impressed with Boulez giving each stanza a slight variation. Boulez's fluid style works so well because of his attention to details and subtle phrasing like this.
Added bonus is this is one of the better sounding late 90s DG digital. Sounding a whole lot better than his earlier Cleveland recording with DG's dreaded *4D* audio recording with deaf engineers.
Weezer. Eponymous debut on original CD from 1994. Such a brilliant initial offering. A shame the band never came close to matching it. I doubt a compilation of their nine albums hence would compete with this one.

Hi Jeff,
Your post got me googling this one. Looks like it's same as the final disc of the "Playback" box set on 6 HDCDs from 1995. I highly recommend the entire box set if you want to hear more. Readily found for $20 or less online. Have you got the "Mudcrutch" album?

I am a classical music novice, so it takes many listening to understand what's going on in Mahler's music.
But some scores are easier than others. ( like 1st is pretty easy ) 7th is pretty tough at first but I came to enjoy and appreciate it as I listen various executions by different conductors. It can be a total disaster with someone with weak organisation skills.
Virgin store downtown Chicago was like your record store in London where store clear will recommend which CDs depending on my taste. They hired a knowledgable sales staff. I miss those good old days.
I think it's clear that you are the best example of a novice......., but what is your favorite version....Would be interested in that...
Bert,
Since I have detoured last 30 years, I have a serious catching up to do in classical music genre!
But it is fun and sometime exciting for new discoveries.

That's why forums like these are so useful. Found music I may never have heard otherwise.
That's true.
I found Klemperer via George on this forum. Otherwis. I would have not bothered since he is not one of popular conductor in the US. ( it seems ) But he was such a cheerleader I had to try to see what he was on about. Another discovery through George was Edwin Fischer.
Another occasion was Lenny's Tristan und Isolde via EJS on this forum. Fantastic set!

The Japanese version had what I think of as the best ever recorded Stones gig at The Forest National Brussels in 72 as an add on to the Marquee set.

Supposedly a new Mudcrutch album coming out this year.
For the umpteenth time via Tidal. It's on the wish list.
First run of high res files, on USB.
Cheers,
EJ
....perfect as background for breakfast with a lady...
1st run, good but doesn't appear to be overly special, but let's give it a chance of a couple of runs, it's at least as such enjoyable..

Telemann's Trios & Quatuors to go with a pale sunrise and meager temperatures of 2F which are not going to rise.
