What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
Edit to my Journey To The Centre Of The Earth posting, the running time is in fact an hour and forty five minutes not the three and a half hours as stated!

First listen to this and I'm liking it a lot. They seem to have gone back twenty years to the style of their early albums and its worked really well for me.
Is this a new Garbage album, Steve? If so, I've missed its release!
Mike
It is Mike
Thanks, Ewemon. Must get my order in as I thought I had all their albums!
Mike
I really enjoyed it Mike, I'm sure that you will too, particularly if you prefer their original albums Garbage and V.2; its on Tidal, I can't remember if you have that? Enjoy!
Steve
I'm a CD luddite, Steve. But I bought a copy at HMV today so will be playing it soon. ![]()

Great, enjoy! I found it was downloadable from Bandcamp so I got it early doors today for £6.99. ![]()

Big Big Train's very good new album, Folklore.
U2, War, original vinyl bought the day it came out back when U2 where exciting and brilliant, and before they became trendy to like, whch was before it became trendy not to like them. I had the pleasure of watching them just as they were on there way up and they were special back then. SQ isn't as good as I recall it though

This anthology does a good job of collecting highlights from Rodrigues's peak years in the 1950s, and includes several pieces recorded in 1970 on her final masterpiece, Com que voz. The set contains fado classics as well as striking versions of Portuguese popular songs. Originally released on Blue Note in 1988.

On vinyl.

Robert Plant. Lullaby And The Ceaseless Roar. On CD from 2014. Added this to my collection earlier this year and have been giving it lots of listens. Very creative and beguiling musical fusions.

Meat Loaf. Bat Out Of Hell (1977). On HDCD from 2001. Among my favorite rock operas.
I've always struggled to find a decent sounding copy of this album, never tried hdcd. How does it sound in comparison to cd/vinyl?
Owen,
I've also got the original CD and vinyl. None of them has particularly better SQ. The album was recorded at Bearsville Studios. Some great albums have been recorded there, but I've never been a fan of the sound signature of that studio - generally a shallow, narrow-field soundstage. Add to that Todd Rundgren's heavy 'wall of sound' production and no mastering is going to make it outstanding for SQ. The important thing for me is the passion captured in the recording, especially on the vocals. Given Meatloaf's and Ellen Foley's powerful voices it must have been demanding on the recording engineers.

Paul Simon. Rhythm Of The Saints. On CD from 1990. I had this one pulled off the shelf for my listening tonight only to tune in here and find BigH47 just listened to it as well. Maybe a clairvoyant inspiration?

(2007)
Played and enjoyed much earlier this morning before daylight.
During workout, mix old and newer...

For breakfast...

Stevee_S I will search that recording out. BTW FLAC 44.1/16 is not up sampled to DSD64 but is transcoded. The sampling methods are quite seperate and different.
Perhaps not that relevant in this thread, but just noted it in your description.

Midnight Oil. Diesel And Dust (1987). On CD from 1988. Brilliant music and some social consciousness delivered from down under.

Simon, I was introduced to Foy Vance's music by this forum and find it very enjoyable. Thanks for correcting me re upsampling/transcoding, I was following what it said in my Audirvana preferences and settings i.e. "Forced Upsampling" & "safe volume reduction before DSD upsampling". Here's hoping you enjoy Foy Vance, this album is a great place to start with him.
