What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.
Last year's thread (and links to previous years) can be found here;
I fell in love with First Born by the Michael Garrick Trio mainly thanks to its appearance on the wonderful Impressed by Gilles Peterson compilation of rare British Jazz. I had long promised myself that I would get hold of the original album from which it was taken. While my pockets weren't quite deep enough for an original slab of vinyl, it did stretch to the CD. It arrived last week and I've been listening to it repeatedly ever since;

And what a CD it is; beautifully recorded and the rest of the album is just as good, Annunication being a particular highlight. Right now it's playing off the Pono through my Senn HD600s while I sit in the sun lounge and drink a particularly fine Gewurtztraminer. Mmmm...

Night in front of the telly..................see above. ![]()
Why? I fancied something light and catchy.

Anouar Brahem Trio - Astrakan café
As recommended yesterday, by Haim.
C.
And to follow Cold Mountain, what else but this, one of the most sublime Jazz albums you could ever hope to hear. And another superb recording to boot...

My wish; Much as I'd love an original copy, the four figure sum needed is just too steep. So.. pleeeease could someone like Vocalion reissue this one on vinyl.
Until then, the BGO CD (which also has the lovely Dusk Fire) will do just fine, thanks...
p.s. Thanks to Tom at Naim who lent me this CD all those years back in an effort to further my jazz education.

Because I've been neglecting Damien recently. I'm always stuck by the superb reproduction quality of this album.

Joe Henderson - "Double Rainbow: The Music Of Antonio Carlos Jobim" (1995)
Nice one Jeff - hadn't heard this before despite owning "So Near, So Far (Musings for Miles)" & "Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn". Tidalised it and immediately ordered the CD - a bargain £2.67 at the usual place. Cheers N.
Glad you liked it BN. So Near, So Far is a favorite of mine as well, love Scofield's playing on that one. regards, Jeff A

This after RD name checked Gilles Peterson, who went on a mission to Brazil find an original copy of this ultra rare 1965 jazz funk, soul, and latin LP, originally released on the USA Fantasy label. Which was then reissued on the UK based BGP Records and is still available.

This great album by this talented gentleman would have completely passed me by if it wasn't for this fine forum. Thanks to whoever it was who suggested this one.
Once again, Tidal is your friend here.
Bit of nostalgia earlier whilst cooking dinner. These guys wrote some great songs. Tidal.

Followed by a classic.

And rounding off before watching some Olympics. A great album - much played lately.

An artist that is new to me. If you're into jazzy sax you'll probably like this.

Jerry Garcia Band - "Jerry Garcia Band" (1991) This finally showed up on Spotify Premium (US). CD copies currently in the $80.00 area. 2 CD live recording from 1990, several awesome covers of Dylan, some terrific Hammond B-3 and some really tasty playing by Jerry. I'm a happy bunny.

A beautiful album that I can highly recommend.

1990 - Original vinyl...
Drove back and forth to the Netherlands and listened to multiple discs of the Tokyo String Quartet playing Beethoven...
Later in the evening I heard a recording of Bayreuths Wagnet Gotterdammerung of this year....

Good call, Rob. I haven't given that excellent album a spin for a month or two. Time to dig it out again.
Good to see the band performing 'live', back in 2014. I'd like to see them for sure.
