A three-CD set, with separate volumes focusing on original works, classic jazz, and, finally, songs by Cole Porter. Wife is not at home making it possible to have three hours of uninterrupted Fred Hersch.

Was prompted to listen to this after watching Dominic Sandbrook's rather flippant TV series on the 1980s on iPlayer. It struck me that the 1980s were a bit of a desert culturally - in particular musically (some indie/avant-garde/electro music and stuff like New Order, Cocteaus, Smiths, Loop etc excepted).

Look at how many 1960s and 70s giants - Bowie and Dylan most obviously - fell from grace spectacularly in the 1980s. Here's another one of the greats of the 1970s on the ropes. The material is desperately poor, the guitar playing muted, the singing weak, the lyrics terrible, the production tropes horribly dated... even the cover sucks. "Cruise", a weedy reggae-tinged grumble about Mrs Thatch's favourite missile, is simply embarrassing, and"Murder", about Lennon's death, is just trite.

This 1984 solo outing is a grim portent of the horror of A Momentary Lapse of Reason three years later. Listening to this UK first pressing, I realised why I haven't listened to this LP in three decades. Along with the aforementioned AMLOR, this is DG's weakest effort, in or outside the Floyd.

I agree with your premise that 1980's music was largely a cultural dessert; often overwrought with synthesizers, electronic beat, and heavy production. Lots of lost music that should best remain that way. That said, I like "About Face" and while "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" is rather dreadful for its muddy sonics I find the music there quite good as well.

1996 - Tidal...

Missed it first time around . Not as subtle as Core but still very much STP.

A gem of an album. Takes me back to the heyday of my FM radio listening to alternative/grunge music in Seattle some 20 years ago. Quite a vibrant scene in those days. Where have all the good times gone?

With a Linn Krystal cartridge. Fun, fun fun! Astonished how well it delineates each instrument and Paul's vocal ever so up close and intimate.

Good old bit of Southern Rock to wake me up today.

Esfahani in an incredibly rythmic, danceable rendition of the Goldbergs. He spins long lines and applies subtle rubato, a singer at the keyboard. Brilliant stuff.

I was contemplating on his move to the yellow label. Once, this meant something...

It would be hard to say what is my all time favourite album, but CTTE is very likely my most played album. It's also the album of which I have most copies, formats and remasters. An undisputed masterpiece!

A+ | Transcoded DSD

(1998)

One of his finest albums, fast and furious shredding at times, melodic interesting rock at others.

Great call, G . The combination of Brufords drums and Wetton's bass on Easy Money should keep your 400s happy for a while.  Enjoy it!
