What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol. XII)

2016 has arrived today, so time to start this thread afresh.

I bought a copy of this without knowing the music. The vinyl was possibly the quietest I have ever bought in over forty years of record buying. I enjoyed the music a great deal, but, towards the end of the first track on side two, a nasty rasping distortion appeared on the right channel for about two minutes. Suspecting that my stylus had picked up some muck, it was inspected but found to be clean. The pressing was faulty. A replacement was obtained from the shop this morning, but it exhibited the same problem. I tried in vain to speak to someone at the publishers 'customer help line', I think they were in South Africa and the line was terrible. Reluctantly I returned the record for a refund. Have I just been unlucky? Has anyone else noticed the same issue?
J.N. posted:Lovely ambient, atmospheric stuff. 'Emancipator' is essentially Doug Appling from Portland, Oregon, but I had to order via Jakarta Records in Germany to get the CD-R. It's easy to access as a download.
'The Way' I knew as 'The Way I Feel' by Fotheringay - being originally a lovely Gordon Lightfoot song.
A nice, lively, transparent and dynamic indie recording/mastering job (produced by Doug Appling on Loci Records) with some delightful sub-bass content. As we all know by now; it takes a major label to properly screw-up a recording.
John.
Hi John, It's good to see this being played here, I got mine as a download from Bandcamp. I don't know if you will be interested, over on Bandcamp you can download the 2014 concert "Emancipator Live in Athens" (Georgia). It's a 'name your price album' so essentially just a dollar or more, as you see fit. I can only see it (on Bandcamp) as a download so I am not sure where you would be able to get it if you wanted vinyl or cd?

Some sweet tracks on this album.

Hi Steve, I have all the albums up to 1974 .... TYA, Stonedhenge, Ssssh, Cricklewood, Watt etc .I replaced Undead this morning as the LP is well past it & I heard TYA on a US www.radio station last evening, so a timely reminder. Plus its a must have for me as I was there at KK on the night it was recorded so its a bit special for the nostalgia.I saw them play so many times I lost count, I was in the Marquee pretty much every week in those days & TYA tended to get a gig more often than most. One gig finished with Alvin crashing thru the drum kit. We could all see he was well out of it when he came back after half time, but even so that set was a real TYA classic.
You lucky thing Mike. I saw them a few times too but not at the Kooks Kleek recording. I've alway's been a fan and pretty much prefer the first few albums.

I've mentioned Klooks Kleek & Marquee, have to mention some others .........Middle Earth (Roundhouse) was as good as it gets especially as they had more than one band playing & ran non-stop from 10pm till dawn --------- Still got my membership card in the memories box
Great memories Mike, I remember trying to get home at dawn from the Roundhouse on many occasions...

A very good self-titled find on Bandcamp, a well executed mix of prog rock, metal, soul and funk.

Just spent a very pleasant morning listening to this forty track double album cruise through some of the stones finest. A very comprehensive compilation of hits.
"Rolled Gold, spans their transition from chart heroes to album kings, and from Decca to Atlantic (and their own label). recent revisionism bumps up the psychedelic whimsy from Their Satanic Majesties album on this re-release, but then gets stuck into the really dirty stuff. From Beggars Banquet ("Sympathy For The Devil") to Sticky Fingers (the oh-so-politically-incorrect Brown Sugar) the second half of this set is a perfect lesson in how to grow up disgracefully in public and still make awesome sleazy blues rock while you're at it." - Chris Jones The BBC
STEVEE_S,
I have quite a few Stones albums on vinyl. They all sound as if recorded in my garage on a Walkman. I hope your streaming was more enjoyable.

Hi Dave
I don't listen to much 'Stones these days. However yesterday I played what turned out to be the US version of Aftermath ripped from a 1986 CD, the sound quality was actually pretty good. This Rolled Gold album fell as a slight casualty to the noise wars, being a more recent CD. I enjoyed both tremendously but I do know what you mean about some of the rough 'Stones recordings although I haven't listened to any on original vinyl since mine were pinched decades ago (now replaced by CDs)

Sonny Landreth, Levee Town, my first album of his. Great guitar and a unique style, finger style with bottle neck. Excellent.

He was John Hiatt's guitar player. If you haven't already heard them then I would recommend Slow Turning and also Stolen Moments from Hiatt.
Hiatt is another artist I missed over the years. Thanks ewemon.

I really should play this more often, excellent debut from LG and what a great voice Hannah Reid has.
Likewise Stevee - been playing this a lot recently
Christian McBride Trio - Out Here. Been dipping into this quite a lot recently via Tidal

One of my favourite albums of the mid 70s. Their best album in my opinion. Love Peter Sellers in "New York Girls".
Jason Isbell - Something More Than Free. This is a good album (although the production isn't quite to my taste - a little muddy to my ears perhaps) - don't know if I prefer this or Southeastern.

Yes, it is also my favourite of their albums and Maddy's voice is just sublimely haunting in Weary Cutters.
